OK - since we are on the topic... in the song Positivity where P goes into his "rap" does anyone else think it sounds like he is chewing gum??

Call me crazy but this sounds sexy (no matter what it is!) and drives me crazy everytime!!! wink

Ha! Yes, I know what you mean. It kinda bugs me though. There are a couple other non-Lovesexy songs where he talks and it sounds smackly too.

To answer the original question, put me in the camp of people who absolutley love it. I think it's brilliant and uplifting--I know it's a cliche to talk about it as "life-changing" and "inspiring" and all that, but that's how I feel about it. The tour for it was incredible, still my favorite, and I love the gaudy costumes and outrageousness of it all. After the, I don't know, heaviness or whatever of Parade and Sign 'O' the Times (both of which I also love), this just seemed like Prince having a lot of fun.

Research has found that it often takes six attempts before a toddler will accept a new food item being introduced into his/her diet.

How many times could you have listened to this in one day?

Try again.

One thing to consider ... taken out of order, this album is a completely different experience. I myself started with 1999 and heard every single album in succession.

When I heard Lovesexy, I was just coming off of Sign O The Times and a Black Album bootleg. Lovesexy was amazing, because my mind had been "prepared" for it by the previous albums. I cannot imagine hearing Lovesexy AFTER hearing Musicology or Rave.

Seriously, it is one of his finest moments. Granted, it is a little "out there" for some fans, but I'm more into his experimental/spiritual stuff than his other stuff.

I was going to buy it online the other day, until I listened to the songs on the sample song list....I feel like such a horrible ungrateful fan for feeling that way...maybe it is a grower. I did not care for Musicology at first, now I love it!

I felt like I was cheating on Prince as a fan for not liking the songs eek

Maybe I will order it, get a used copy or something.....

Don't even get me started on Musicology!

"Spooky and all that he crawls for..." Yeah, P is chewing gum on that track. He must have been going through a gum-chewing phase in '88, because I noticed in the footage from Camden Palace aftershow, he's chewing gum whilst singing.

I bought the Lovesexy album yesterday and I must say that it is my LEAST favorite prince record of all time.I tried to like it really I did but I find every song besides Alphabet Street unbearable to listen to.

I'd have that checked out if I were you. It just ain't right not to dig LOVESEXY.

I'm kidding, of course. You are entitled to your opinion. Lovesexy was kind of a rush job. I don't think P was shooting for the top of the charts when he conceived it. It makes sense that some don't like it much. Especially when you consider how legendary it has become among hardcore fans, I can very much see someone hearing it for the first time and thinking...huh?

Lovesexy is a grower, at first I heard, I thought it was overproduced; and it didn't help that it was all on one track, so i dismissed it.

But after getting a little bored with Stevie Wonder albums, I decided to take it for another spin; and its really great; I love the jams, and 'When 2 R in Love' is a song where I hope I find myself to be with someone I love. such a great album

Lovesexy is a Fan Favorite but critically it's not really held in high regard.

The Critics will always go with Sign, Purple Rain, Parade and 1999. A Lot would also cite Diamonds and Pearls as a more essential release.

I think Lovesexy's psycho babble appeals to certain fans. I think it's a so so album.

Alphabet St is a good pop single but a bit of a novelty song, not really deep, it makes me think of Seasme Street. Anna Stesia is a very good song and the highlight but the guitar needs to be more to the forefront.

On a whole the album needs to Rock more. Positivity for instance has some nice guitar work but it's buried. And The title track could have been a real hard rocker but it's overloaded with synths and effects and I wish U Heaven is far too airy fairy.

I know many folks on here adore this album, largely cuz it's when they first got into P. But it's interesting cuz when u ask folks that had already been into P from very early on, it's a different story. Me, I still think what I thought when I first bought the album the day it was released. It's a good album. I dig it much better than Parade & Signs. This is an album that he blew it with his choices of singles though. Alphabet St shouldn't have even been on the album. That's a straight b-side cut. Songs that should have been singles and with the right videos, he would have had a much bigger album.

Positivity
Anna Stesia

Those two songs right there are the best two songs on the album. He could have had a killin' video with Sheila in it with him. Great music, hook, and lyrics. Could have worn his Lennon glasses from Signs, with his guitar hanging from his side, standing in front of a classroom. "Have u had your + sign today?" Done right and fitting with the theme and the tone of the track, it could have been bangin'.

Lovesexy (Definately should have been a single. He could have had a crazy ass, wild, P-like party styled video. Why he didn't release this as a single was nuts.)
I Wish U Heaven ( was a single)
Glam Slam ( one of P's best videos. Cool music but weak ass lyrics. Sounds like he didn't put any time into that. Should have been a much stronger song.)
SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
nammie "What BGZ says I believe. I have the biggest crush on him."

Obervations right on point and well-said. However, as one of those fans to whom the psychobabble appeals, I would say Lovesexy is a great album. And I'm sure the sound is exactly what Prince was going for, buried guitar and all. He needs to challenge himself, even if it means leaving many of us going, "huh....?".

I'm a long time fan (For You) and this is one of my favorite albums. It only took one listen for me to love it. As a matter of fact my least favorite song on the album is Alphabet Street (too commercial). I think that you're either a fan or you're not. I must admit that I'm no longer into collecting his work like I used to be, but I doubt very seriously that he could produce an album that I totally hated.
