While first two prince albums were solid work,
his first tour de force was dirty mind.
prince took funk spiced
it

up with elements of punk and new wave
and
he started to make history.
dirty mind contains one of the best
pop songs of whole time
when you were mine (covered by annie di franco, cindy louper
(sorry for bad spelling),mith ryder, and other popular artists.

sister is something simular to clash.
there is that miss you by the stones influanced funky ditty uptown.
not to mention wild lyrics
that cause album to
be no best seller
(althought album reached gold status 500000 units)

so Prince was probably aware of the fact ,
that Dirty mind is
not going to be a mega seller,
but he didn't care.
he wasn't going to be a one hit wonder,
he was here to stay in popular music.

when i bought chaos and disorder in 1996 when i was 14 kid i was very pleased with the result.
i thought:wow prince is going to rock.
i also skkiped tracks like i rock there for i am,dig u better dead, but i liked that album.
but as time goes by ,
new prince music came(especialy rainbow children)
i started to realise that prince's best effort in rock music is not on chaos and disorder.
before and after chaos and disorder
prince had ton of songs that rocked harder and had more emotion then chaos and disorder.
i swear that in some moments purple rain album rocks harder.
i find "i like it there " the only song i spin from that album from time to time.
but in terms of the things happening at the time i like album for what it is
a fuck off wb album.

Chaos and Disorder ????
You're kiddin' me, aren't you??

A classic innovating great album (read Dirty Mind) vs. a disaster first class (read C&D).

C&D: A funk star trying to be a rock star ...
Why don't you buy some real rock albums like N.I.N. / A.I.C. / Deftones / QOTSA / Led Zeppelin or one of the other 1000 great rock bands ... I really hate it when people do like the slick rock side of Prince ... but I guess the same people do like Aerosmith, Brian Adams and Bon Jovi too.

I don't know what's worse : Prince trying too be a Rock star or Led Zeppelin trying to be a Funk band?

In the old days Prince fans were alternative music lovers ... nowadays they're mainstream all the way! ...
the slicker, saver and more commercial his music becomes, the more appreciation it gets ....

thataintfunky prince is good at rock as he is at funk but chaos and disorder isnt best examples of prince rocking
prince always had strong elements of rock.
he makes great rock music(from the middle to the end of family name)when he is not restrained to make hits.
but yes his rock songs made to be hits like so far so pleased are cheesy and dated.
best rock songs by prince=bambi,i like it there, annie christian(live),fury, darling nikki,interactive...

You gotta be kidding lol 'Chaos and Disorder' is garbage....a complete throwaway album. It contains two of Prince's worst songs of all time: "Right The Wrong" and "I Rock,Therefore I Am".Most of the other songs sound like Lenny Kravitz outtakes. The only good song is "I Will".This album is contractual filler, nothing more.

'Dirty Mind' is AMAZING!!! It's my second favorite Prince album (after '1999').It's the first classic Prince album and a taste of what was to follow."When U Were Mine" is arguably Prince's greatest pop/rock song."Head" and "Partyup" are classic Prince jams.

Come on now! lol

One of the most ridiculous things ever posted here! Prince isn't purely a funk artist, which I shouldn't have to tell you. He's made alot of funk music in his career but he's also made his fair share of rock and other styles too. Just sounds like a very poor excuse to bash Chaos & Disorder to me. Although the thing you said about his music being commerical is true.

As i said, i think in general Dirty Mind is a very good album, but i also think its a tad overrated.

Soundwise it offers a new kind of mix between funk and new wavish pop-rock, but at the same time the compositions aren't that strong (You can hear Prince evolve on this level with jumps and leaps on 1999 and Purple Rain), and the music is sometimes very thin sounding, missing the raw punch and energy some songs on Chaos and Disorder show.

It seems like people in love with Dirty Mind (which i consider overrated) have a tendency to bash Chaos and Disorder (which i consider underrated, there are some of his best raw sounding rocksongs on it) out of 'loveblindness'.

That is absolutely spot on. The 'sound' of DM is what's innovative and trend setting about it. The actual songs themselves are quite uneven. Do It All Night is generic and uneventful, Gotta Broken Heart Again is a 'standard' unremarkable tune that could fit on his first 2 albums, Sister is a sliver of a mess... That's near half of the album and many of those tracks would sound wafer thin if they happened to appear on a later release.

In essence Prince is purely Funk, but funk is a lot more than you think!
Funk got a lot of guitar too ... listen to Funkadelic. I'm not talking about the riffs only, I'm talking about the heavier guitar work too.

Most of Prince's guitar-driven songs in the 80's were pure funk, not rock.
I'm not dissin' the great funk songs with loads of guitar work ...
I'm only dissin' the slick 90's rock attempts

I completely disagree. The songs on Dirty Mind are not uneven at all."When U Were Mine" is a perfect pop/rock song.It can rightfully be called a "classic" Prince song."Do It All Night" is an excellent funk number which paved the way for future jams like "Let's Work" and "DMSR".The relentless title track is one of Prince's strongest New Wave jams."Head" and "Partyup" are two of the funkiest jams Prince ever came up with! In many ways, the 'Dirty Mind' album was ahead of it's time.In 1980,you didn't hear too many albums that sounded like that.

There's no way in hell that C&D is better than Dirty Mind.

Dirty Mind is a classic.

C&D is decidedly average. I can barely listen to it.

I think When You Were Mine and Head are the only two songs I can agree with you on...

Chaos and Disorder is bloody awful. Not only is it not better than Dirty Mind, it isn't better than ANYTHING. Probably the worst album to carry Prince's name. A better argument would be "What album is worse than Chaos and Disorder?"...

Glad I could clear that up for folks smile
