Prince's cheesy side

Is there any part of a Prince song that you would like to alter to make it better? For me, when I hear a Prince song it usually seems full and complete (so many things going on in subtle layers in the background) but tracks like 'Lolita' and 'The Arms of Orion'sound overproduced and trying too hard to be sexy/romantic with the end product being a dairy farmer's dream - pure cheese! What do you think? neutral

"Make Your Mama Happy" and "My Name Is Prince" come to mind for me.

I'd also change the "... or a bagel with cream cheese" line in "Pearls B4 the Swine". That line single-handedly ruins the song for me. It's cheesy--literally.

Haha, not if I can help it.

The song is perfect the way it is. See my siggy, it's tattoed on my soul for a reason.

But yeah, I do agree it's a very cheesy track, but it doesn't need any changes to make it "less cheesy"

Despite their cheesiness, I still begrudgingly like these songs:

P has always been extremely corny...the thing is in the middle of his career it worked... I mean no one could write pop hooks and layer it with bottom and still have the perfect lyric to capture it all. IWD4U, I Wanna be UR Lver, 1999, Little Red Corv, Kiss fantastic pop records that boarderline corny but don't because the lyrics holds up

then shortly after Lovesexy it began to unravel

corny: Gold, TMBGIW, Diamonds & Pearls (lyrically)...yes Lolita, A Million Days....he lost the lyrical edge...the entire Rave un2 Joy blah blah blah

He does capture it sometimes...like Fury live...but man Lolita's chrous is so horrible. No you never ever ever...no you you never ever ever...no you never ever ever make a cheater out of me! Man that is terrible

A Million Days, I find to be one of his better pieces. Sure, the lyrics are simple compared to what he's done in the past, but so what? I wouldn't label them as corny. It's hard to do that when he delivers them in such a heartfelt matter.
I agree on TMBGITW. That's why its hard for me to believe Prince wrote it. I like to label it as something prince did. Lolita, I agree on, but its the music I'd complain about just becuz its too modern 4 Prince. D&P, agreed, still love the song for its music.
Gold, I think we've overstated as being one of the cheesiest/corniest tracks ever written by his Greatness... still doesn't change the way I feel about it.

Some of the above u mentioned make a lot of sense, Kiss is the corniest out of all of them. I Would Die 4 U was the 2nd Prince song I heard in my life (after 1999), still like it, though.

Sorry for saying this, but I'm not too crazy about this thread anymore. I should probably stop reading it becuz I really don't like criticizing Prince's musical decisions... he does what he does becuz it feels right to him regardless of how cheesy/corny it is. I respect him for that and I really don't like tearing into him for something so trival.
Sure there are some decisions he's made that I don't agree with, but its either regarding the arrangement or length, not so much the components (except in the rare cases when the music is wrong 4 the lyrics)...

good post... I forgot about Glam Slam...you can see him beginning to unravel lyrically right before our eyes in this very song. The middle eastern vibe with that bottom heavy drumm machine and the string section at the end...only to be sabatoged...by this ..."glam slam thank u mam...you really make my day...glam slam thank you mam...I pray you'll always stay. CHEESE ALERT...BUT MAN THE MUSIC AND ARRANGEMENTS ARE SO GOOD!.
Dance... Let me see you dance

Courtin' Time.

His whole first album.

Grafitti Bridge

"All Of My Dreams" sounds like Jerry Lewis telethon music.

He should have let Snagglepuss record Bob George.

Prince is capable of very enjoyable 'cheese', i mean songs like Graffiti Bridge, Diamonds and Pearls and Into the Light are borderline cheesy, but in my opinion those kind of songs are nonetheless great, because of the quality of the songwriting and the outstanding musicianship.

Prince is also capable of very bad, toecurling cheese in the form of songs like The Greatest Romance ever to be told, Hot with You and most of the material on New Power Soul. The kind of songs that can't be saved because they are let down my mediocre songweriting and plastic sounding, dated production.

Million Days is indeed one of those very bad 'cheesy' songs, in terms of a musical arrangement it goes 'nowhere', i don't know what he was trying to achieve with it.
Next to that, the lyrics are as shallow and corny as some of the most cheesy songs in the hitparade during the eighties.

I think its one of the best songs on Musicology. At first, I didnt know what he meant by the arrangement becuz he only did the chorus once... so I was a little confused for a while. Then when I listened to it again a week later, it just made more sense and I fell in love with it even more. It's a very emotional piece about lost love... I could care less about the lyrics "cheesy" or not.

Sure, I see the cheesiness of his lyrics. If they're really bad, I'd know, but I like all of the songs mentioned regardless of that.

Cally My name... absoutely... but I love the video.

On the Couch... I dont even listen to anymore cuz I find it so dragged out and boring... and it doesnt interrupt the flow of Musicology at all, so it's not a big cut for me.

Satisfied from 3121 is very much like it, but I can tolerate Satisfied... and the way the album is set up, its kinda hard to play the album thru w/o it.
