hell let's make it interesting and add the other classic lp from the eighties....Like A Virgin.before everyone gets upset let me explain ....we all compare Prince and Michael but Madonna was just as influential and popular as they were, and she had good music( have the same argument with comic fans about comparing superman and batman but not wonder woman)

Purple Rain is the single best album of all time...

so, PR.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Wow. I can't believe you haven't heard Wanna Be Starting Somethin',
The Girl Is Mine (With Paul McCartney), Beat It, Human Nature and P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing). They were played a lot on my local radio stations and on MTV.

I loved both albums and was excited for both of them. At the time, MJ was probably the favorite, but Prince has had the longevity. That and he hasn't been accused of molestation!

I'm a huge PR fan but.....for me Thriller was better!!!
Think of the videos and the worldwide acceptance of the album.....Thriller far superior!!
Okay, lets throw this out for debate...rather than do a song by song comparision..let's compare just the biggest hits...
Purple Rain...biggest hit was either Let's Go Crazy/Purple Rain...
Thriller's biggest hit was prob Billie Jean.....
Now the debate....which was a better song and which had the best video????? Keep in mind video was King in the 80's....
my personal favorite was Billie Jean....
Let the debate begin.....
Keep in mind I'm a bigger Prince fan than MJ fan...

The only thing you've heard on Thriller is the title track and Billie Jean?! Oh my god how old are you? Hell I'm not even an MJ fan per se and I have the damn Thriller album. falloff

Btw - I'll take Purple Rain even though I hate that Take Me With U is a duet with Crappalonia.

Let's not. Considering the title track from "Like A Virgin" is a rip of "Billie Jean" which is a rip of a Jonny Guitar Watson song. lol

1999 > Thriller > Purple Rain

Thriller edges out Purple Rain, for me. But, I have to add, 1999 beats them both in my book!

This isnt even a debate is it?? I was a teenager when both records came out and I enjoyed them both. They were both manificent works and both landmarks in their own right. I prefer Prince as an artist but am not narrow minded enough to think that MJ is not great in his own way. The thing us 80s teens were lucky to have rue pop superstars in Prince/Michael/Madonna but as good as they were they were all different - but Prince was best!! lol

U wise, wise person, almost totally agree (only difference is I think of MJ as having "been" great 25 years ago rather than "being" great in his own way, apart from that i'm with U all the way) lol

I have Thriller on vinyl as well as Purple Rain. LoL

However I also have Purple Rain on cassette and CD. lol

Thriller isn't my favorite MJ album (maybe because they played it SO MUCH!)

I'd have to go with PR (it isn't my fav Prince album either)

Computer Blue is my favorite song on Rain

My fav on Thriller would be The lady in my life (although the Thriller video is fierce!)

Track by Track, thriller wins for me. That said, PR is a better listen because Thriller is so overplayed, and the title track is just a show tune, The no.6 sings are so great, nobody makes music like that anymore.

Thats not true! Check your facts!

"The Message" - Mellie Mel
"Electric Ave" - Eddie Grant
"1999" - Prince
"Little Red Corvette" - Prince

Were ALL on MTV before MJ released "Beat It" on MTV.

As for the Topic: I'll hit every angle, because both albums made MTV into what it was (before it became a Reality TV network) rolleyes

Head to Head:
1. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' VS cool((Let's Go Crazy))cool
2. Baby Be Mine VS cool((Take Me With U))cool
3. The Girl Is Mine (With Paul McCartny) VS cool((The Beautiful Ones))cool
4. Thriller VS Computer Blue
5. Beat It VS cool((Darling Nikki))cool
6. Billie Jean VS cool((When Doves Cry))cool
7. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) VS cool((I Would Die 4 U))cool
8. cool((Human Nature))cool VS Baby Im a Star
9. The Lady In My Life VS cool((Purple Rain))cool

** I copied and pasted the list from here, wasnt Human Nature the 2nd LAST Song on Thriller not 3rd last. I always remember that because I love love love Human Nature & Lady in my life back to back!??

Songs I like on Each (Still in 2007)

Thriller:
1.Thriller - I dont know if it is the memory of the time, the behind the scenes video, the cool beat & or just the peak of where MTV could go... There was no ceiling for MTV when this video came out! I still like it wink

2.Billie Jean - It is just ok, when you known music and know MJ stole the bass line from Hall & Oates "I cant go for that" in 1981. Plus the song is played to death it is starting to fall off for me. But I am still luke warm on it.

3.Human Nature - MY favorite MJ song ever!! It was never sold out, just a quick nothing video it wasnt overhyped, plus I LOVE toto, and they help make it! Win Win!! smile I just love the production on this song!!!

4. Lady of my Life - The BEST MJ R&B Song!! Really this might be my favorite song by MJ, ok it is tied with Human Nature wink

Purple Rain:
1. Lets Go Crazy - Just the BEST way ever to start an album!!! Just all energy & that guitar solo at the end.

2. Beautiful Ones - Name another song that starts as a R&B Love Song and turns into a Rock song cool I just love love love the Keyboard in the middle! That is 1984 to me, when I hear that wow it brings me back to the energy of 1984 wink

3. Computer Blue - Just raw and nasty smile I cant believe he put this on the album. This is the edge on the album!! It feels underground and to this day it is just raw.

4. Darling Niki - It just flows into the last song and I this song brought Prince the edge of the main stream of being naughty eek lol cool I love it! Great promotion to be the reason, we have stickers on albums. well one the big reasons! Tripper's daughters werent listening to Ozzy or Twister Sister lol

5. When Doves Cry - It is pop, it is a demo!?! I love the video, love the scream at the end!

6. I would die 4 u - This is my church! This is where Prince talks about "his religon" - it explains god, jesus, and just love! what it is in real life without organized religon.

7. Purple Rain - The BEST bic lighter song ever! The best way to end a concert! The BEST guitar solo, the best stamp to tell the mainstream who you are, and yes check out my catalog! I LOVE the end when Prine does the "Woooo hoooo.. wooo hooo" .. Perfect Song!

Thriller Video VS Purple Rain Movie:

I go with what Lionel Ritchie said - Prince brought it to the NEXT step he made a Movie out of his Album!!! We have been picking 1 song doing a video. Prince made a movie out of his entire album.

No one has done this since or if you do, you are not doing anything original.

Prince Brought "Music Video Culture & Era" to the NEXT level with Purple Rain The Movie & then won an Oscar! An Oscar!!

2 great albums.
If I was a Prince fan, I would say Purple Rain.

Purple Rain has the best lead singles (When Doves cry, Purple Rain, Let's go crazy, I would die 4 U)

But Thriller is extremly balanced. Actually, the filler tracks are better than the lead singles to me. That's why I like Thriller. Not for Billie Jean, Thriller or Beat it, but for all the rest of the album. The filler tracks.

While the rest of Purple Rain is not as good : Take Me With U, The Beautiful Ones, Computer Blue, Baby I'm a star and Darling Nikki are not as good as the lead singles to me.

Purple Rain weakness are the filler tracks. Also, Purple Rain lacks some pure "rnb" songs. It's just too pop /rock oriented to me.

Let's crazy, When doves cry and Purple Rain are the reason why Purple Rain is a classic album.

I can't really say because i've only heard a couple songs off thriller but i'm just gonna go ahead and say purple rain!

It's obvious that almost everyone's going to say purple rain, though! i mean, this is a prince fan site! It's like asking a black guy if they like white people or black people.

all it took was for a Don Imus to start it and others following suit disbelief

as far as the topic .. machinegun .. it's a Prince site.. Thriller was a great album for Michael, but Michael wont win here ..

I am ready for the beat down... lol

I liked Thriller better than PR when they first came out.
both were excellent albums... but there were some cuts I preferred on Thriller than PR songs.
Billie Jean, Lady of my life, PYT, wanna be starting something...
I was more into R&B and Thriller was more R&B.

I never liked Let's Go Crazy, I would Die 4 U... or Baby I'm a Star.
PR has stood the test of time to me... I hear new things musically that I never noticed listening to PR on top 40 radio.

And to me, I think 1999 beats both of them. razz

I liekd Thriller and Mike first. I was 13 when Thriller was released and 14 when Purple Rain was released. I had a crush on MJ first and did not get into Prince until PR. I then fell madely in love with Prince, lol.

PR wins for me, but iIstill do like Thriller. And the Thriller videos definitely beat out Prince's production wise.
