You so called Prince fans are all driving me nuts with your picks. You all got problems. I thought when I will click on this subject I would see mediocre songs but instead I'm seeing timely classics that people are dissing. Obviously everybody on this sight is on some type of drug or just purely insane. Damn! You just can please some people huh! Now before I get to my picks, I have beef with some of you. To those who picked "Little Red Corvette", "Kiss", "Purple Rain", "When Doves Cry", and especially "Adore"(my all time fave), you guys make me sick to my head. You are not real critics so who are you to judge what others like and criticize. Where's your multi-platinum album or song at? I didn't think so. Don't hate help create. Simple as that. Who cares what you think the only person who matters here is the creator himself, Prince. So as long as he's happy with it then I'm happy for him. And by the way man, good work. Keep it up. Now! For the dodo who said Prince is bored with Purple Rain and calls the song lame, you're wrong totally. First of all, how do you know Prince feels. Have you spoke to him? Did he tell you this personally? I didn't think so! If you knew the story behind Purple Rain than maybe you can understand it better. This song has always been emotionally tough for Prince because it (just like the movie character himself) has ties to his personal life. Especially to John L. Nelson. Who is no longer with us nor is Mattie his mother. Has it ever occured to you that Prince cut mostly all his songs short in his concerts (which I've been to several over the years) because he is on a time restraint and he has so many songs to sing that its virtually impossible to sing the full version of any of them. And maybe he doesn't want to sing "Purple Rain" because it affects him emotionally and not becasue he's bored of the song. He's sings that song for us because he knows that is what we as the people want to hear. So next time check your facts before you make statements like that. I'm done. Peace ingrates! Welcome 2 the dawn.

LoDog, I usually don't go back at responses, but:
I happen to be the person who hates "Little Red Corvette". I don't care if it is a "timeless classic". I DON'T LIKE IT.
Just because it has longevity doesn't mean it's good to everyone. no no no!
How old are U? I was around in 1982, and I turned it off whenever it came on then, too.

I also happen to love "The Rainbow Children". Should I go off on how I think your rant was immature and unnecessary while your choice for songs you don't like was poor? I'll just take comfort in the fact that I don't have to play that DAMN "CORVETTE" SONG if I don't want to hear it, and I won't ever have to meet U.

Seriously. disbelief

I find its a very exceptional song becuz Prince does something in it that I've yet to hear him repeat in another song. Sure, I'm a newbie, what would I know right?

However, I've heard enough of his material to know that there's something special about that song. It's not big on words and they're as cryptic as they get in the Purple Rain soundtrack... but the song wins me over on instrumentals alone.
I feel like from 2:19 to 3:31 on the song is the key. The lyrics are so vague that you've got no clue what it's about (I still don't), but I feel like the instrumentals tell a story... its chuck full of emotions that goes from one end of the spectrum 2 the other.
At this point, that's the best I can come up with.

It's an alright song in my opinion. Whenever I hear the "Father's Song" part of the song, I think "That sounds like freaking Duran Duran"
Purple Rain is one the few Prince albums that I barely listen to.

In fact... think about the sheer artistry in the lyrics to Adore... i.e. "If God 1 day struck me blind, your beauty I'd still see... Love is too weak too define just what you mean to me." Wow.

That's not artistry, those are called "cliches". Right up there with "If I threw that ass in the air, it would turn into sunshine." lol

lol

That one I at least haven't heard a hundred times before. Even the movie The Last Unicorn has a variation of the blind line.

You know who you make me think of? Those reactionary, posessive 14 year old twits that used to get into fights about BSB vs. *N SYNC, and accused anyone who dared behave like an adult in their love for one or the other boyband of not being "true" fans -whatever the hell that means. I bet you tear up and start name-calling when someone isn't licking Prince's ass, don't you?

"Little Red Corvette"

"Raspberry Beret" - I've said a million times how much I absoulutely HATE this song!!!!

"1999"

"Sign O The Times" - it's got a great message, but something about the song just bothers me immensely

It's not an essential Prince song. It's a famous Prince song. As in, well-known amongst the masses. As in, something drunks at parties karaoke to. I happen to like LRC, but I wouldn't call it essential Prince by a long shot.

I say that this is an essential song, because this is the first song that the "average" Prince fan can recall. This was his first MTV video and it put him into the mainstream. Ol' schools like me remember all of the music that didnt get airplay before Corvette, and I'm not saying that you're not ol' school either, but Corvette really placed Prince on the mind of America, and you gotta include it in any Prince convo, IMO of course

I can see why people hate it. 'Cheesy' is their favorite word for it. I see the cheesiness... but the song has personal meaning 4 me unlike any of his other pieces.
That's why it's tied 4 first place w/"Purple Rain" in my list of fav. Prince songs.

ADORE

Most over-rated Prince song evah!
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Did you even comprehend what this thread is about? It's about songs that most people gush over and you (that's a general 'you', not you personally) just don't think are that great. Thus, all the songs you listed in your purple rant are great examples for this thread--songs that the masses usually love but not everyone.

RIF dude. reading

And your whole post is full of hypocritcal statements. Do you know Prince personally, how he feels, why he sings Purple Rain, etc? Are you a "real" critic? Doubtful.
