Who is his favorite artist? He mentionned being strongly influenced by Carlos Santana. He had lots of posters of Miles Davis on the walls of Paisley Park. He went to see Madonna on a play in New York...

Sly & The Family Stone definitely has to be in his top 3, if not #1. He says they've inspired him again and again.
He even mentioned them in "Musicology" the song. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone | |

He use to hang out at P-Funk shows doing the Mothership era before he had his records out as a teen. Also Prince is a HUGE fan of the Rolling Stones. Listen to Uptown etc. That's why they invited him out on their tour. Jimi Hendrix Sly and the Family Stone He has so many influences but James was his biggest influence of all ala NO.1. The dances, hair styles, outfits, music, business wise etc. James had did all that before he was even thought of. Plus he has two musicians from P-Funk....Maceo and Greg. Maceo from both JB's and P-Funk. Oh wait.... and of course:

I think he has been inspired by Stevie Nicks, Chaka Kahn and Stevie Wonder.
