Sign O' The Times: 20 Years later

music As disc 1 progresses, I must say that I'm re-discovering Prince's "Magnum Opus", and it's just as great as it was released 20 years ago to this day.

I remember my mother getting it when I was 4. And I was ready for anything Prince did because I knew it was gonna be amazing. And guess what? it was!!! woot!

I still think "Purple Rain" is the greatest thing my superhero has ever done. But SOTT comes in 2nd. But that's just me. wink

I really think this album is one of Prince's albums most likely to stand the test of time -- it has aged so well and doesn't suffer from Prince working in "current trends" (like Diamonds & Pearls with the rappers). It doesn't sounds like an 80s album to me, or a 90s or 2000s album. It just sounds like Prince at his best.

It does sound timeless, and Prince at his best.

But my problem with SOTT is that - for me - it just feels incomplete. I can't listen to SOTT without thinking of all the other songs (from Crystal Ball and Dream Factory) that should be included. SOTT feels like it's just the tip of the iceberg, and i want the WHOLE iceberg.

That being said - - - it's still brilliant.

I always skip 'It', 'U Got The Look' and 'The Cross'. Otherwise, I love it.

I think it's the strength of the lyrics which make this album a classic.

So many forum members here obsess about the groove of a song or it's musicianship. I don't care for guitar histrionics or how technically proficient a certain drummer is.

How on Earth did he go from the genius narrative of Dorothy Parker to the high-school poetry of Dolphin?

One of my favorite albums.

Pity it wasn't a triple album as was originally intended, but I must admit that
I much prefer the sequencing on Sign O' The Times to Crystal Ball. Though
it has to be said that the live versions of some of these tracks blow the album
versions away (particularly I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man and
It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night).

Definitely!
I can't help thinking that the movie had more than a little to do with the album's
standing as 'best Prince album' by the majority of fans.

I remember getting my first copy . . .

I was a sophomore in HS, and it was about midnight on a school night. My sister woke me up and said "here" (she bought me the tape).

I stayed up for hours listening to it - the next day at school was rough, but it was worth it!

Even though Michael Jackson's Bad , which came out the same year may have sold more.I think SOTT is much more appreciated today.

Oh yeah. nod And I'm open for arguement in saying that it's probably Prince's best movie.
