"Dorothy Parker" - sneakily, SOTT's best song 4 me, it went from zero, to hero over the years...innovative, with a great feel, and some of P's best head scratching lyrics

kinda cool - last time I was in a cafe and Joni Mitchell's "Help Me" came on, while the waitress turned it up.
it was my own little "dorothy parker" experience

Its one of those songs that seems to have been given a second life, once Prince dug it out for the live shows some years after its release. For some reason, people ignore it, until Prince decides its time for a return.
The same happened for She's always in my hair and Joy In Repetition. Never came near the lists for top 20 songs, them bam, peformed live and its everyones favourite! I think the Ballad of DP is a fairly good track that has aged far better than some of Princes other "electronic" songs. .

maybe where you all are from. but dorothy parker was the jam for me and my peeps when SOTT came OUT. and we couldn't WAIT til he'd treat us with a live rendition of Hair. Detroit radio killed that joint and rightfully so. neither were "sleeper hits" for the Prince fans i know

sure it's THE groove for all cool dudes!
some say it was very much the inspiration to the Outkast song - She Lives In My Lap - Once saw a vid of a live performance. Very cool. My fave P. song

One of my fav Prince songs.
When I first bought the LP (we're talking 1988) I would skip over this one (along with Slow Love). Now I can't get enough of it. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

I once took a bath with my pants on while eating a fruit cocktail (.....at the time, I wasn't too hungry).

Just today I was listening to a live P concert and "Ballad of Dorothy Parker"came on and I said, "...that is my favorite SOTT track!"
Glad to know there are others out there. Even the ones who read posts and don't respond to them.

I felt the same way the first time I heard it. I would fast forward through it when I was a kid. Kids do some dumb sh*t sometimes. Seriously though, I agree. TBODP is easily one of my favorites off of SOTT. "I ordered no broth! Away with ye lest my cane find your backside!!"- Ralph Wiggum, Actor.

I bought SOTT in May of 1987 and Dorothy has always been one of my faves, right after If I Was Your Girlfriend, Adore, and SOTT.

My sister played it for me... I had tired of Prince.
It blew my mind... remains the high point of an incredible body of work. I'm laughing at the electronic quip, this track sounds so natural. as in live playing, I know it's not, its part of the charm. It is fair to say that this cut actually changed my life. Music has never been the same... bubblebath or no.

yeah I love hearing this one
on vinyl, with the crackles & pops it's so "ridin downtown in the back of a taxi cab at 9:38pm... with your Dior shades on... looking out at the busy streets & lights" kinda like that "U Got The Look" video because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

Finally!! For years I was telling people about Dorothy Parker being one of Prince's very underrated songs (the question of U is the other). When I heard Dorothy Parker, that became my favorite song on the SOTT LP. That song is wicked. [Edited 3/28/07 22:14pm] “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. Didn't have to grow on me... Because of SOTT, Hot Thang, DP & Starfish & Coffee it took me almost two weeks to get to disc two when I first bought it.
"And she said, 'Whoooo eva's callin' ... can't be as cute as u,' Right then & there I knew I was through."
