Rare Prince Songs: Breathe & Madrid 2 Chicago I was cruising the internet and found this site talking about Prince songs that were released on the NPGMC and they mentioned two songs I hadn't heard before named "Breathe" and "Madrid 2 Chicago." Has anyone ever heard these songs? Are they worth me searching for? I read the lyrics and they seem sexy...I can only imagine how Prince sounds delivering them! I'd love to hear those two songs. He'd better make them available for purchase soon....or else I'm gonna have to P2P 'em.

These two joints were released in January 2002 as part of the NPG Music Club. This was the last "official" month of monthly ahdio shows, rare videos and unreleased trax.
Breathe is a sparse track that is roughly 2 minutes in length. Linn drum-type sparse beat with some minor keys. Prince is, well, breathing through this song, whispering. It's a nice and calm reflective piece. Breathe is credited to "The Artist." According to the NPG Music Club, "Breathe" was planned for inclusion on an album entitled Madrid 2 Chicago, described as a "smooth jazz album". Breathe Breathe (x3) Take me in2 the deepest part of your emotion Breathe Whisper again the destination u want 2 go Breathe Slowly I drink the cascading energy that runs down your hillside Baby, baby Breathe Ahhh Breathe in Breathe out Slow, slow Breathe Breathe in Breathe out Slow, slow Breathe Ever and ever it seems I've never stop what u want me 2 do 360-degree slippery circle the moaning it's kind of rough Ohhhh Breathe baby Breathe baby Passionate fashion of tongue that keeps lashing on skin like a whip Ooooh Breathe in Breathe out Slowly, slowly Oooooh Madrid 2 Chicago was also part of this January 2002 NPGMC release. It's a little over 3 minutes in length, about 3:15. I do believe it's one of the main routes Prince took to Chicago to Madrid to be with his then wife Mayte, when they shared a home in Spain. Madrid 2 Chicago is also credited to "The Artist." It also has linn drums, real drums, and a deep but sparse organ (like single note keys). A sample of "Madrid 2 Chicago" was made available on the Love 4 One Another web site on January 26, 1999. At the end of the track it takes a jazzy spin. Madrid 2 Chicago Madrid 2 Chicago Nothing but U on the mind Bills 2 pay, my hairdresser's gay And the present proves there's no time (time) 3 pillow couch in a dark brown shade Another misinterpretation and I still got it made (made) How am I gonna make this connection when I, I got nothing but U? (Nothing but eatin' that pussy) I got U on my mind, U on my mind Madrid 2 Chicago I got U on my mind, U on my mind Nothing but U on my mind (hey) Transfer a million dollars 2 gold The opposite of ivory color of your thighs Is molded into my mind Like the secret code of Egypt And I love U, said I love U, I love U, I love U Madrid 2 Chicago And there's nothing but U on my mind (mind) U, baby Madrid 2 Chicago U on my mind Madrid 2 Chicago Got U on my mind Madrid 2 Chicago U, U (Da da, da da, da da, da da) U, oh, oh, U on my mind (Madrid 2 Chicago, Madrid 2 Chicago) Got U on the mind (Madrid 2 Chicago, Madrid 2 Chicago) Oh, I can't stop thinking about U baby Madrid 2 Chicago (Madrid 2 Chicago, Madrid 2 Chicago) U, U, U, U, U (Madrid 2 Chicago, Madrid 2 Chicago) Oh, nothing, nothing but U on my mind, yah (u on my mind, on my mind) Ooh, oh yes, as soon as I see U baby I'm gonna put my tongue right there, ooh Please fasten your seatbelts We're making our final approach... As a side note, these two melodic joints were released only via the Internet and never on an official release. Breathe and Madrid 2 Chicago were released on the Internet with "A Case of U," "Here on Earth," "One Nite Alone," and "U're Gonna C Me." The remaining tracks, all piano-laden, were included in the "One Nite Alone Solo Piano and Voice" club-only release in late 2002, included in the "One Nite Alone - LIVE!" multi-cd set from the 2002 tour. Much love to Housequake and DTT for some assistance in background and lyric confirmation. On a personal note, I really dug the January 2002 NPGMC release, as well as the last "ahdio show." The last ahdio show is just so cool because at about the last 15 minutes, it's Prince and The Band in a rehearsal session from, I would believe, sometime in 2000-01, possibly prepping for the 2002 tour or one of the past Paisley Park week-long "Celebrations." It's all pretty much instrumental -- The ? Of U, The Undertaker / Groove On (groove), Courtin' Time / Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On." It's hilarious as Prince and the band are having fun in the studio. "That's a big symbol there! And it rings until next Tuesday when you hit it!" (During The Undertaker/Groove On) "Somebody get some tape! I can't stop my legs!" (duing Courtin' Time) (during the end of Courtin' Time) -- "It's that you Mike? Wait a minute, listen. He's breaking it down. Whooo! Ladies and gentlemen, Jackie Brown is going to hold this note until the police come. Watch this! He ain't gonna stop. Hand ain't never get tired. He's got a strong wrist. Let me explain to you why. I don't want to see nobody laughing. We gonna tell the truth tonight. That boy's gotta strong wrist. Kirk you know why. Whoo! He ain't tired .... I guess he is. Get your watches out! Clock him! Now me? I got strong fingers! Kirk let me tell you why. Boys they ain't never get tired! Heh, heh. Never get tired! ... I lied."

Possibly why he didn't release them on wax or CD on the "One Nite Alone Solo Piano and Voice" 2002 club release is of his toned-down sexual viewpoints. Clearly Breathe and Madrid 2 Chicago, though beautiful arrangements and great keeper joints, didn't fit the mix of "One Nite Alone." Just look at the lyrics.
But I wonder where Breathe and Madrid 2 Chicago would have been placed in the 10-track One Nite Alone '02 release? I am glad that Prince decided to release these, albiet independently, through the club. [Edited 3/30/07 9:40am]

[Edited 3/30/07 9:40am] At the time the four ONA tracks were released as previews, these two were released as previews of the album "Madrid 2 Chicago", a 'smooth jazz' album by (not Prince, even though he was known as Prince again - so presumably this album was recorded as a whole before he returned to using Prince again). These were never intended for the ONA album. [Edited 3/30/07 9:44am]

Wow, the lyrics are pretty overtly sexual. Were these songs released prior to his religious conversion? There is so much Prince music out there that I, a huge fan, have not heard. It's amazing.

I keep saying this!!!!! Prince has never stopped being overtly sexual. Even his most dogmatic album "The Rainbow Children" has some references to sex toys and masturbation. "New Power slide...."

You're right, but he has found a way to be a more sexually mature songwriter. These songs seem more explicit in an old school P kind of way. I just can't see him singing the word "Pussy" today.
