best released Prince album, yes...

The unreleased 3 album Crystal Ball album probably was better though.

Agreed and more than likely agreed again!

Can you post the tracklisting? I have Dream Factory remastered boot and still think Sign O' the Times is better but would like to see how the original Crystal Ball compares.

SOTT is among his best efforts, given Prince's showcasing of his mastery of diverse genres. It's gospel, metal, pop, R&B, etc. all rolled across two LPs. Given its patchwork brilliance, I'm not sure it "hangs together" as well as a more focused work like Dirty Mind. I'd put DM high on the list for its elegance -- minimal instrumentation, clean arrangements and killer elements. 1999 and Purple Rain are high on the list, too.

i agree. outside of two or three songs, SOTT is full of "tunes" -- i.e. beats and studio tricks to tickle the ear. the other three albums you mention show more artistry, thought, and complexity in the compositions, performance, and arrangements.

Hmmm, I'd say that as a testament to the breadth and scope of Prince's studio talent in the 80's, it's hard to surpass SOTT.

However, I find prince to be more mature and enjoyable overall.

Picking Prince's BEST work is like picking the best Ferrari.....very difficult task and in the end it doesn't really matter.
