Best Album for anybody.
probably.

that he has work that can compare says just how good he is.
not good, I mean great.
has it really been 20 years?
what day was Sign of the Times album released?

anybody please...

not for me personally.
people should hunt down the album proper.
it is a musical education this record.
if it takes a re-release to get the message out then cool.

best released Prince album, yes...

The unreleased 3 album Crystal Ball album probably was better though.

Let me put it this way: If I was to be jettsioned off of this Earth and could only bring one album that best showcased all that is essential about Prince, Sign O' The Times would be the album I would choose.

Yeah, it is. Awesome production, great lyrics, no weak tracks...

But...hummmm, Purple Rain or 1999 are just as good as SOTT

I always drop that on the 110" screen when I have company. Folks go NUTS over it. I'm amazed how many people have NEVER seen the film of SOTT.

I love SOTT and I can see it as Prince's best album. It certainly is the critics fave and the fave of a lot of fans. But, I think there's a bit of riding the bandwagon going on. It reminds me of when every rapper says Scarface is their favorite movie. Sure, it's a good movie, but there are lots of other good movies.

I really think, and this may sound completely stupid, that Purple Rain is underrated. It sold millions, it made Prince a superstar, it crossed him over into the mainsteam, all the singles were huge. So, how could it be underrated, you're probably asking?

It's tough to disassociate Purple Rain from the hype. Because it crossed over, I find some hardcore Prince fans not wanting to acknowledge that Purple Rain was so great, because that is what casual fans think. To say Purple Rain is the greatest album is to, in a sense, suspend your credentials as a non-average prince fan and run with the masses.

But, I was listening to Purple Rain recently and it just blew me away.

One thing that is often said about SOTT is that it's all over the place in terms of styles, textures, themes. That's fine. I love that Prince engages in all different sorts of music and pushes boundaries. But, that all-overness, to me, makes SOTT possibly his best collection of songs, but not necessarily his best ablum, if that makes any sense. Great albums, to me, are more cohesive.

That said, 1999, Dirty Mind, and Purple Rain are his best albums in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong. I love SOTT and am not putting it down. I just wanted to share these thoughts for discussion.
