'The Dance' (Original) vs. 'The Dance' (3121)

I originally downloaded 'The Dance' on the NPG site. I absolutely loved it and listened to it all the time. When 3121 come out I noticed that 'The Dance' was one of the tracks listed so I was thrilled that the rest of the world would hear this tight song.

The version on 3121 was different from the original one I had downloaded.

Which version do you like better?

The extended portion of the 3121 version is the only thing on that album that makes it worthwhile.

I was thinking about this the other day. There are elements of both that I enjoy. I like the deeper voice he uses on the 3121 version, and the "passionate" ending. At the same time, I like the sparse harpsichord sound and the groove of the original. Hmmm....maybe he should do it a 3rd time? lol

My nieces's birthday is this week-end,
so I'll probably go to the mall to buy her a present.

There's an FYE in there so I gotta make a mental-note to finally pick up 3121.

So I hope to be able to post an answer soon.
Til then,
your patience is greatly appreciated.

Oh,

can somebody org-note me a reminder tomorrow?

Oh I like the original MUCH better, the music is very different, and the whole thing just sounds a lot more sincere.

The original seems to have room to breathe. It is natural sounding, where the 3121 version seems contrived and insincere, like the latter recorded Old Friend 4 Sale.

I'm not totally wild about either version, but the original is far superior to me. The 3121 version is so overblown that it sounds quite hokey to me -- like he was looking for a way to work in those trademark "The Beautiful Ones" screams anyway he could.

It's just not faayah!

Blah.

I was actually thinking about this the other day cause I listed to the original on Sunday. I would have to give it to the original. I still love the 3121 version but I can play The Chocolate Invasion version over and over and never get bored.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I've only heard the 3121 version, and when I really listened to it, I fell in love with it.

It's a beautiful song cuz Prince is like a storyteller.

It has a lot in common with "The Beautiful Ones" (the ending especially).

Actually, the transition from the beginning to the end of the song is very similiar in these three songs:

The Beautiful Ones (1984): A Million Days (2004): The Dance (2006)
(if you wanna debate me on this, im open for that)

It starts out slow, a little cautious and becomes passion with a capital "P" during the last minute or so of the song. Completely crazy, but I love it.

Sorry I can't be of much help for the debut, but I love the way he does it in 3121... he's very passionate in it. I love when he does that in his music.

Im glad this topic came up. For me, its the original. I like the drums better and Prince sounds funkier on it.

That's what captured me about the original one as well. The sincerity of the lyrics and music is so pure. So much emotion. I guess it didn't help that the song described a situation I was going through at the time. I too would have to choose the original. I like the 3121 version too though.

I like the 3121 version better. I think it's cleaner and tighter then the NPGMC version, As stated by others the passionate ending is awesome and really gets me all amped up for the bad ass "Get On The Boat"

the "IT'S NOT FAIYUH!" thread a while back totally killed the 3121 version for me. lol

plus, i still think the original version sounds more like it could be a bond theme.

I'd have to hear the original again, it's been a while. But I remember being irritated that he changed it for 3121, then it grew on me & within 3 days I couldn't stop playing it. I may like them both equally...

I liked the download version but I love the 3121 version to pieces. It went from a beautiful ballad to a masterful power ballad. Absolutely stunning.

No one, and I mean NO ONE does power ballads better than Prince! Lord help me if he ever sings The Dance live.

i am one who missed out on all the npgmc stuff so i only know the 3121 version of The Dance and it's one of my favorite trax on the album. i'm curious to compare the two but from what i'm hearing, if the original is funkier, that wouldn't be an improvement for me. the beauty of the song IMO is in it's structure and progression towards crescendo. does the original have that feel? do handclaps come in at some point? Prince does funk often and well, but The Dance (3121) is in a stylistic category that perhaps only Gold and Sweet Baby is in for me; (even though i'd say Gold is kinda poppy). So it's very different and say, cinematic. Not poppy, not R & B, not gospelish, and not a power ballad (even with the screams, which i hated at first). It is interesting that someone said the original feels like a Bond theme. So though i can't officially compare, my opinion is already tainted; perhaps in the same way of those who heard the original first

I like the 3121 better but I didn't get the Chocolate Invasion until after 3121 so didn't hear the original until after I heard the new version and already loved it..

I've also listened thru 3121 countless times while I've probably only listened to Chocalate Invasion three times maybe so maybe haven't given it the proper chance...
