Prince's hair

For the (Black) hair stylists among us....

What is the deal with Prince's hair? I recall seeing a shot of the top of his head as he was entering a limo where it was clear that there were bald patches.

And at the Superbowl it looked as if he had his hair oddly parted and slicked back. Not sure what was going on there. Though I'm not hating on that considering the weather conditions. Sheesh..

Please enlighten.

Im not a black stylist but im black and I can do hair lol
I think when he looked like he was balding it simply just wasnt straight enough in his roots.A lot of the times if your hair is poofing back up itll look like that when you part your hair a certain way.And at the Superbowl...ummm he just had a part on the side of his head shrug I dont see anything "odd" about it.It was a style. And it looked like he didnt even mean it 2 be shown on tv...I think his scarf kept sliding so he just took it off...still I dont see anything odd about his hair style...I thought it was nice and sexy. neutral

He wore a do-rag in the pouring rain the first 5 minutes of the performance. My hair would be oddly parted too. shrug

I stood enough in the front row at Paisley Park in the mid-nineties through 2001 or whenever they basically stopped to know for a fact that Prince was losing a lot of hair and now he is not. I mean I was a foot away from the man dozens and dozens of times and I can say for a FACT that he was thinning noticeably (and as a bald man myself I am a bit of an expert on this lol ).

Baldness does not cure itself is all I know.

I don't know why people are so bothered by the fact that he has lost some hair and has it fixed one way or another. I mean many to most men lose their hair and Prince's dad lost most of his.

We all know Prince is very vain and has even sung that if he lost his hair he would "buy some more".

I saw at the Versace celebration thing he attended with Penelope Cruz, his hair was gelled down and I could like see flesh peeking though at the temples.

And he was REALLY tan!

For the final record, Prince is not balding. Be black and cutting hair and knowing how to use curling irons, Prince's hair is still going strong. During the Superbowl, his curls weren't completely comb out and when this happens you will see gaps in the hair as it is rolled up. It also looked as if he had it freshly relaxed which also contributed this. At the Versace show, by his hair being freshly relaxed and just probably get out of the salon chair, the hair will be very straight or "bone straight" as one would call it and how it cut, for black hair to be "feathered" it will look as it did. As for his hairline, that too is still abundant. He is pulling hair down and gelling it. Why?, who knows, he's Prince and he can do it. I thought his hair looked pretty good at the Versace show, the best I've seen in a while, but by him having his own personal hair dressing, his hair is probably very healthy. The one thing that may being throwing everyone off is his hairstyolist. Earl Jones who did Prince's hair from 1983 to the mid 90's passed away. Ever since then, I myself thought that he had a terrible stylist. Earl Jones was probably one of the best I've seen and it too bad that Prince hasn't found someone quite as good since then. The only other person that I've seen as good Earl Jones is a hairstylist in my area and Prince would be happy as pig in shit if he knew about him. My two cents.

It's not the final record because I and the others who stood in the front at Paisley saw first hand the balding that is no longer there.

I'm sorry that it somehow hurts your feelings that he has done something but he has.

See, I disagree. I too was at most of those late night Paisley Parties from the 90's-2001 and, as I can remember, Prince had a thick thick mane. Especially in 1998/99/00 when he was entering that "rave" era. I was 3 feet away from the man and I surely did NOT see any thinning. Hey, if Prince was going bald and needed plugs or whatever-that's fine-I don't care. I am just telling you that I never once saw anything other than a black man with hair that was processed and styled to look like a girls'.

Simple as this, Prince has never been out the public eye long enough to get plugs as it takes about 6-12 months for them to take effect and they look like patches of misplace hair. You also have to cut hair from donor areas on your scalp and we all know as vain as Prince is he's not doing that. If he was going bald he would just get a wig like Michael Jackson.

Hair thins with age, nothing you can do about that. I'm sure it's happening to P too. However, I can attest to the fact that stress, diet and what you're putting in your hair can make it thin or fall out. Once you get the stress under control, correct your diet, and stop using chemicals that are too harsh for your grade of hair, and styling tools that are too hot -- what was once thinning and balding can begin to grow back. Maybe not as thick as it was when you were a teen but it can grow back.

biggrin Seriously Threadbare... If you are having any of these problems you need to see a licensed stylist that can give you insight on what might be your particular problem. And most of all as tight as you may be with your cousin Neece and neighbor DayDay (you get my drift) letting them do your hair may be part of the problem. If they aren't good licensed stylists they could be part of the problem.

Trust me - If he was balding we wouldn't ever know. Do you really think that a man who is always dressed to the 9's and is always "CLEAN" would walk around with a bald spot? DO YOU? The brotha would have a hat, rag or scraf on...or better yet not even show up and let you see a flaw in his game.

Amen to this. nod

I'm a sistah in my early forties and my hair has always been thick and long and I always went to a professional every other week to get my hair done.

Started working out so I was washing it every other day or so and stopped going to her except for touch ups every 6 - 8 weeks. Then got braids that pulled too tight and I ended up thin on top with my hair frizzy, dry and breaking off. But with good products and more regular professional attention, it's back on track.

If Prince lost his stylist, his hair could certainly suffer if the person doesn't know how to "read" his hair and work with it rather than against it. I've followed my stylist through 5 -6 different shops because she knows how to keep hair healthy.
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

Ya'll are funny.

Interesting viewpoints.

I feel you, HalluRain. I'm a sistah too. I got my hair dyed and highlighted (I must be insane) at a white salon (one of the best colorists in NYC, but still) ON TOP OF a relaxer. Need I say more? My hair came out in clumps and has never recovered. It is 50% thinner and I'm only in my mid-30s. Still mad about it. I get your point about following stylists around too. Mine left town and my hair has been suffering ever since.

Handclapsfingasnapz -- you're right... years of relaxing and blowouts will tear your s*** up.

Joyinrepetion --- I have often wondered how hair plugs could work on Black hair. I mean, he is a guy who relaxes and I can't see you relaxing transplanted hair. But how could you leave that alone and then perm the rest? I don't get it.

Peace.

I don't think there is much you can do for our hair. I know P doesn't have any plugs and getting his hair done everyday like that...I lost my hair and I said "Whateva" and I heard Deion saying "shave the sides off...I lost my hair adn they son't make black hair." I know we see the commercials but ... you know.
I thought about it but it doesn't work like they say it does...I sure miss my hair sad but I will be just the light skined brotha with the shaved head. When you get lemons make lemon aid....

WTF?
blahblah lol

Anyway...
I've noticed his hair looking a bit wicked lately. I contribute it to his getting older. Hair thins as we age. Mine started thining in my 30's, but I still have most of it. I've also been through chemotherapy which took 95% of my hair, but it did grow back completely. Stress will also kill hair. It will literally fall out in patches and you'll be left with a patch of scalp as clean and as smooth as a baby's behind. I've been through that, too. Shots of steroids directly into the bald spot will help it to grow back, but you have to get rid of the stress first.
