I'm not sure if it was the background vocals, but there was something... as far as I'm concerned everything about that song just worked for me. Actually, I'm not really as crazy about some of the use of background vocals in that song, but it's not all in vain. I love the use of them in the bridge b4 the last verse and Prince did a wonderful job with the last use of the chorus, having being alone in singing it, kinda re-emphasizing the message of it using his own voice alone.
