I don't have that many problems when I say I'm a Prince enthusiast. (I'm also a Michael Jackson fan--toss his name into a conversation and see how fast you get shredded!)

Here are a couple of things I've heard:

"He sounds like Curtis Mayfield"--My Dad said that. (Just for the rec, who the hell is Curtis Mayfield?) My father also calls him "Princess" as a gay joke. I keep pointing out Mayte to him and saying that she was his wife. Hell once I even pointed out Manuela!

"He's a dirty little man."--My Mom. (You think if Prince was a choirboy I'd like him? Puh-lease!)

Most of my friends are P enthusiasts and I don't really mention it to other people outside my social circle.

You mean the artist formerly known as prince?
Im like, no it's PRINCE now.

hmm, I'm sure i can think of a few.

-When people refer to Purple rain as "Purple Pain"
-When people call him gay.
-When people mistake his name and then think they have the right to judge someone when they DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT HIS NAME IS???
-When people say he sings like a girl.
-When people try to sing his songs and don't even know the words.
-When people comment on his movies negatively yet haven't even seen him. For instance, my math teacher once said to me when I was wearing my Purple Rain Tshirt "Purple Rain? Didnt that star Whoopie Goldberg? Wait no, that was the color purple." mad
-When people tell me I can't like him because I'm too young.
-When people try to tell my I don't know something about him that I do.
-When people call him short.
-When people make purple jokes.
-When people negatively talk about him JUST because they know I'm in ears reach.
-When people try to tell me I cannot enter a certain place because I have on a Prince Tshirt.
-When people bring up the Superbowl just to tell me how bad princes performance was.

I'm sure I can think of more mad

I'll comment on the ones in bold. If I faced those, I definitely would flip out on whoever brought them up.

That one about 'you can't like Prince becuz you're too young'... I think that would have applied to me, had I started on this journey when I was... say, 13-16. Because I'm legally an adult, I don't think my parents would object to my liking Prince for that reason. My dad encouraged him initially by having me sit thru Purple Rain's 2nd hour. My mom just says that Prince is an "acquired taste", meaning she's not quite as crazy about him as my dad is.
Then again, I haven't really discussed Prince with my dad since I started coming here, so I dunno. I'll get back to you on that.
And yeah, Prince is an acquired taste, I'll admit. In the very beginning, his screaming wasn't something I was into (this was back when I was 17 and was a casual fan), but now it bounces off me like its nothing at all. I willingly accept every aspect of Prince w/o a second thought.

And for the SuperBowl performance, I haven't heard anyone call it terrible. In fact, my Ecology professor brought it up and wondered how he didn't get electrocuted... but he likes Prince, so I've no complaints.

What made me mad was in The Sun so-called newspaper here in the UK, during the time of the Brits last year, some reporter snapped him coming out of the Dorchester & wrote an article basically tearing him apart saying 'who does he think he is? where has he been for all of these years? Had no music output since Purple Rain' blah blah blah. Think the reporter was about 12 years old & had done no research on him! I have no idea how to pull up old newspaper articles, but if anybody could find it, its worth a read just to make you fume!!! mad

That makes two of us... I bet a lot of people here do that, though. But I can't help it. I love talking with his fans because they understand him and in pretty much every case, they know more about him than I do. It's a good learning experience.

Not that this is much of a comparison, but the two other forum communities I've joined for Jesse McCartney and The Click Five are nowhere near this. JMac's forums are usually full of tense and fans attack one another (im usually involved) just because they think a certain way.
The Click Five forums were great, but there's only so much you can say about them. Sure they write their own music and play their own instruments... but they're still nowhere near Prince's league.
Prince is someone you could talk about forever, always learn something from, etc. And his fans have been the most helpful and the greatest to talk to. (again the Click Five forums were helpful too, but we're in a diff. league here).

I gotta go for class, so I'll be back in a couple of hours.

That'd definitely get on my nerves.

But if I weren't a fan of "American Idol", I'd have no idea that he was still making music. I saw him there first and then everything slowly started unraveling and I became more of a fan with each surprise performance (meaning I'd hear of it on short notice).

In fact, if I weren't a football fan, I wouldn't have seen him in the SuperBowl and I wouldn't have come here and become the fan I am. Then I wouldn't have had any idea the kind of career he has going for him currently.

I bet you're all glad I came here and I'm not among the ignorant public.

Yeah, it's easier to have a conversation about Prince with someone who has an understanding of him. It's also a lot more fun to compare notes with people who've been there and done things I've yet to do or won't get the chance to do.

Although I could learn more about how I feel about Prince and connect with him by talking about him/defending him to people that aren't as familiar with him, I'd rather learn more about him.

Regardless, being a Prince fan is always a learning experience. I don't get that from any other musician.

I think my biggest pet peeve (if I ever encounter it) is/will be that someone either doesn't know who Prince or doesn't understand him enough for me to have an intelligent conversation about him. (My intelligence on the matter isn't enough to make it an intelligent conversation).

I'll definitely need to send this website to my roommate from last year cuz she understands Prince as well as I do and I think she'd have a lot to say here.

I know, that's like the biggest misconception about him (beside the fact that people don't think he's doing anything current).
Until I was 17, I didn't even know what "gay" meant. Under diff. circumstances, I think I would have thought Prince was... but either way, it wouldn't have made a difference to me. I'd find him amazing no matter what he is because the inside's what counts.

That was over 20 years ago! Let it go! mad
