Try watching the performance on American Idol on HQ, it may grow on you a little quicker wink the rest of your post i agree with, The Dance and get on the boat, I usually skip over those on my CD, although I really enjoyed GOTB when he performed at the SB press conference!

Actually, I have seen the American Idol performance... I still found it a little boring, but that's just me. It made Lolita a hit with me because I remember seeing him do it and I like listening to it.

The Dance, I'm not quite sure what to think of it. It has me very curious as to the meaning of it all. Don't tell me, though, cuz I want to figure it out for myself.

It's after Midnight here in NYC, the 21st and today marks a year since 3121 finally hit the "Wrecka Stow"! What was your first impression of 3121 and has it changed any since then? What are your favorite songs off the CD now if you have any? What was the most memorable moment or moments of this era for you?

I loved it from the first listen and it got better and better with each listen. I played it the other day and I realized that it's still fresh and I still love the CD. It's nice to have a recent Prince CD that I can play from start to finish and enjoy. Every now and then I don't play Beautiful Loved and Blessed and Incense and Candles but I still jam to the rest. I have no problem saying that this CD is in my personal Top 10 Prince CD's.

As for memorable moments, mine were:
The SNL performance of Fury,
The Black Sweat video on heavy rotation on MTV
Seeing Prince live at Bryant Park this summer for Good Morning America
Prince doing the American Idol Season Finale and the Super Bowl

Hi purplecam, I still listen to the 3121 cd. It brings back memories of 2006-- the tour he did with Tamar and the first Vegas shows (Rio<-he made a guest appearance at the Larry Graham/The Time show; The Empire Club and meeting club members). also, The GMAs in Bryant Park, NYC and the private show for club members at BUTTER Restaurant in NYC...2006 was an awesome time with great memories.

3121, Black Sweat, Incense and Candles, Love, Satisfied, The Word, The Dance, Get on the Boat are my favorites.

3121 is very fine and again shows that Prince is ahead of his time. He switches positions on this CD like he does on a moments notice onstage.

Funny you mention this, because I just spun it again today for the first time in a while. There are some very fine cuts on this disc.

"Love" is a masterpiece. Among my top 20 all-time Prince jams. "The Word" is beautiful and very clever and deceptive in its simplicity. Every time i listen to it I hear something new (I miss that about Prince). "Get on the Boat" is an ass shaker supreme (even though it doesn't get much love around here). "Beautiful, Love & Blessed" is a great springtime jam; upbeat and fluffy - good to listen to with the top down and such. "3121", and "Black Sweat" are funky enough head bobbers. Even 'incense and Candles" has it's moments.

The ones I pass on are "The Dance" (boring), "Fury" (awful after I heard the live version. Over produced. Can't listen to it), "Lolita" (just plain goofy) and "Te Amo Corazon" (the worst first single to an album Prince has ever chosen).

....

"Love" is a sick, sick track. I played it at my wedding reception and danced like a fool.

3121 is my favorite album. Similar to The Gold Experience, but fresh and new sounding. It's gonna be a classic and talked about a lot in the future.

I actually bought it on 3/21/06. But you know what I did first? I popped in my "Dirty Mind" tour DVD to reminisce. Coincidentally that very show was filmed in New York on March 21, 1981, 25 years ago. eek

But then I put on 3121 and I'm like....shrug "it's just not the same".

I mean, it's good for what it is and the songs are solid and stuff ("Lolita" is a funky track). But it could never hold a candle to that masterpiece called "Dirty Mind".

When I first listened to 3121, I thought to myself that this was the CD I used to wish he would release in the '90s so that my r&b/hip hop loving friends would appreciate him more, even though his 0)+> period was my favourite era. I found it funky and quite "Classic Prince". I was really happy to see on the liner notes that Sonny T. and Michael B. were on the title track.
My fave moments off this era were the BET Awards & American Idol performances, but his 2006 Brit awards performance totally blew me away. I never thought I'd see Sheila E., Wendy & Lisa on stage together again (even after all these years, Sheila E. has still'got the look). Ti Amo Corazon was beautiful, "Fury" was okay, but two songs weren't enough, so Prince did an awesome Purple Rain (you'd think I'd be tired of seeing him play this song!) and then, like a Reverend, he yelled out: "Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here to get this thing called LIFE!" I wonder what he'll do next...

Interesting comment.

I wanna say I'll keep that in mind the next time I listen to TGE, but I wanna think of each album seperately before comparing them. That way I won't think any worse of an album just because it didn't have a certain something another did.

But I think I kinda see where you're going with that. There's some unique things musically that Prince added to 3121 that I saw in TGE. I can't remember which tracks at the moment, but I have a slight idea what you mean.

Man, everyone brings up such good points when comparing the albums, but I find it a lot to comprehend at one point. These days, I find it hard to believe that a person such as Prince even exists... I mean, wow... he's done and accomplished so much and just adds a little something extra to his music that nobody else has. I'm completely blown away by him whenever he comes to mind.

Hi 2elijah! Man, GMA was fun wasn't it?! I was sooooo hurt that I didn't get into Butter. It's still a little painful to think about cause I know that show was hot as all hell. I remember when they played Purple Rain at the Loews Theater on 34th St that same weekend or the weekend after that. Man it was so much fun.

i definitely need to listen to 3121 tomorrow... i gotta doublecheck a couple of songs. but i remember "the word" standing out quite a bit. in fact, on Monday night, i had a Prince song in my head and i knew it was familiar. so i looked thru 3121's lyrics and quickly found which song it was.

It's gotta be special if it came to mind. I know this sounds so lame of me... but tomorrow will definitely be 3121 day. i'll listen to it and try to get a better feel for how I feel about the album in comparison to Musicology.

There was something catchy about the melody that stuck in my mind, so I'll definitely get back to you guys on that.

i'm surprised that more people arent feeling "the dance". i can still put it on repeat and dance for hours. i love the emotion towards the end and even find it somewhat haunting in the beginning. my baby boy stops whatever he is doing, runs in to the studio and sings to the top of his lungs "BAYBEH!!! clapping clapping clapping clapping and he goes crazy when i sing the rest. I love it!!! fallinluv

These lyrics have me very curious about the meaning of it all (don't tell me yet!). I'll be sure to listen closely to it. I wasn't feeling it the first time... but the 2nd time on Monday, it had me very curious, so I'll be sure to have my ears and mind open when I listen to it tomorrow.

Yeah, that song's great. It has so much energy and it's so happy... I like it when Prince is happy and his music reflects that.
