Do you prefer Prince Underground or Mainstream? I was listening to NEWS today (isn't everyone? ) and got to thinking about the material he put out via NPGMC or 2000 - 2004 era. And also the hit and runs he'd do. Those times certainly seemed more special and more accessable to the hard core. The music at least wasn't trying to be mainstream, as it is now. He also seemed to be able to put something out much easier than he's been doing in the last couple of years.
Which do you like better the Musicology/3121 era we are in or the one that was right before it...I guess it's the NPGMC era? Christian Zombie Vampires

Although I've only listened to each of the albums twice (Musicology, 3121, TGE),
I definitely prefer Mainstream Prince (Musicology/3121) to Underground . is still a mystery to me and it'll take a little time to get to know him before I'm sure about how I feel about him. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Underground Prince is what made me a fan, more or less. I didn't like him when I was younger. Then when I went to college I had a roommate who had bootlegs, and I discovered Prince that wasn't on the radio and began to like him.
Now I dig both! "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

is still a mystery to me well, that could be a good or bad thing. Prince is full of mystery and I love uncovering new ones. But I need to spend more time with to know how I really feel about him. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

who knows what his intention behind the Gold Experience was but that is one of his best mainstream sounding underground albums.....3121 is growing on me especially after hearing most of it live
is it lack of promotion or is it just the fact that most people can't handle great music like this?

This may be a cop out, but I like when he is firmly straddling the line. He can be both and he often is both very well. "New Power slide...."

that's the reason I bought it in the first place, plus because it's his most recent album. I've seen him do Lolita, Satisfied, Fury, Te Amo Corazon, and Beautiful Loved and Blessed in diff. award shows and shows and such, so I already knew a lot of the songs already. It's not quite the same as hearing him do it live in the shows, but its good to have familiar songs to help me adjust to the new ones. I'd very much like to know his intention behind TGE, but after listening to it a few times, I'm sure he'll tell me thru his music. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. Underground! I like the stuff that sounds raw, natural, and not so produced. That's why The Truth is one of my all time favorite albums.
One song I'm really digging right now is When I Lay My Hands on You. The beginning sounds like something off The Magical Mystery Tour. [Edited 3/19/07 21:38pm] Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com

You're very aware of your need to adjust to new, unfamiliar work. That's refreshing, especially when so many jaded listeners are quick to judge works they don't immediately understand. [Edited 3/19/07 23:38pm] In the case of Prince, I usually just take the song on how it feels when I hear it. I don't read too much into the lyrics and I listen to the music. Usually if the song has a good beat/flow to it, has great arrangment of instruments or have lyrics that sound pretty and grab my attention, it's bound to be a song that I like. I'm more than willing to give all of his songs an equal chance because he gave each of them a lot of work to write. Gotta appreciate his dedication. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. Same here - I loved the duality of the old days. That you could hear him on the radio day & night, yet only the die hards went digging for b-sides & seeking out after shows (at least, that's how it seemed to me). I want him to have enough exposure so I know what's going on w/ him but not so much that I have to kill a bitch to get in the venue
