I love pretty much everything he puts out. As a past guidance councellor once told me, "Even his crap stuff is better than most everything else". I would have to say all in all, I prefered Musicology. Take Incence and Candles off of 3121 and it would be pretty close. [Edited 3/18/07 23:05pm]

It's a great album, but not "classic". It's in the second tier of Prince albums IMO. That is, it's not a masterpiece like 1999, Lovesexy or The Rainbow Children, but it's funky nonetheless.
My only gripes with 3121: "Satisfied" sounds like a throw-away track. Not bad, but just kind of been-there-done-that. Also, I used to love "Love" when it first came out, but now I find it somewhat bland. But yeah, "3121", "The Word" and "The Dance" are A-grade tracks, and the rest is good. Oh come on! Not everything Prince releases is a classic. This is passable at best. Sure, it's better than a lot of other music that's out there, but I'm hoping it does not set the standard for future Prince releases, because it's sub par.

It's the sexiest sounding Prince record in a long time. And I hear joy, something that's been missing since forever.
Having said that, the line "you can't never leave," coupled with his JW association is kinda spooky. In fact, that whole track is pretty creepy. His spirituality has taken an alarming turn in recent years, and his religious songs just don't convince me. I love the way "The Word" SOUNDS, but the actual lyrics and thrust of his message are still pretty paranoid and contentious. So I can groove to it, but I can't really sing along to it. I'd say he's rediscovered his aesthetic and career mojo, his desire and lust for his craft and for mainstream success, but not his feeling and passion for life.

Check out my thread to get my opinion on this album.
http://www.prince.org/msg/7/221299 Of the 3 I personally own, (Musicology, TGE are the others), 3121 was the one I instantly connected with. I was the most familiar the material on it, having heard nearly 1/2 of the tracks already. Although I'm in no position to call it a classic, it won me over as easily as Prince himself has. Listened to it a couple of times in the last week, and think its a really good album, much better than Musicology (and I like Musicology too)

And definitely a minor at that, too.

I listened to it for the 2nd time today (the first time was Saturday) and I really like it a lot. I heard Musicology twice, but I actually split the first listen in half... I listened to half of it one night and stopped because I wasn't "feeling it", and I finished it up a couple of days later. I'm not quite sure what to think of it as an album just yet. I was less impressed with it than I hoped, but I think I had some expectations of it that weren't met because Prince's style takes his definition of music to a diff. wavelength that will take me some time to get in synch with. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong.
