Funny you should post this today...Just last Friday I called the classic Jazz radio station here in Baltimore to ask if they ever play Prince's jazz songs. The DJ (who said she's a fan and called Prince a genius) had never heard of N.E.W.S. I told her about 'The Rainbow Children' too. She asked me to call her back this week to see how she liked them. I feel like if people only knew of his versatility he would be more popular. I wish I had warned her about the narrator on TRC. Prince has other jazzy tracks like 2morrow and Strollin that would be recommended listening...What would be the best song to push for radio play in a classic jazz format??

Don't forget to introduce her to a couple more albums: Xpectation and C-Note.

.....

No doubt confused

I bought N.E.W.S when it came out and I thought it a pretty good and put it away for awhile. I just recenty got Madhouse 8 and 16 and have been jamming to both especially Madhouse 16 because it so funky. Just 2 days ago I played N.E.W.S again and to my surprise it sounds so much like Madhouse 16. I've been spinning it ever since and my friend at work is dying for me to burn copies of all three and Madhouse 24.

I always laugh at people who make comments and assumptions like this, thinking that they're somehow psychic and know exactly what other people are thinking and why they're thinking it. Bart, sorry to break this to you, but you ain't psychic and you really cannot know what people think and why they think it. Still, at least your posts on the Org give the rest of us something to smile about. You hate Prince and the fans who still enjoy his work, but you still post here.

Great response to old Bart. If Prince fans praise something Prince does he just assumes they are idiot purple Kool-Laid drinkers. He can't fact the facts P sold a 100 million dollars worth of concert tickets just a few years ago. Some people really like his music and if others don't they are should not come to Prince.org and bitch about everything P does. Just move on .

If by "cult" you mean dancing around a bonfire while sacrificing goats and singing occultist chants together, yes I could see how "N.E.W.S" could be considered a treasure among such circles.

i don't think NEWS is the best thing ever, but i don't think it deserves the thrashing some people give it either. i think it's a moderately interesting album that's nice to play every now and then. i don't know why some people get so bent out of shape about it either way. shrug

oddly, i made a big compilation of prince stuff a few years back for someone who wasn't familiar with his music at all, and i threw NEWS in...and it turned out to be their favorite part of everything i compiled for them. go know.

Yes, and it won, iirc. Best non-vocal jazz album, maybe?

I like N.E.W.S. Like Anx said, it's not the best, it's not the worst. I use it to trick people who, if they knew it was Prince, would rolleyes or something. I put it on and then when they're enjoying it and ask who it is--BAM. It's Prince! HaHa--you like Prince! biggrin

That is such exciting news about NEWS. I've always loved that album, from the first play. It's so rich and moving. I'd love more of this kind of thing, really I would. It is saturated in authenticity and is a genuine album showing his integrity as a person.

So exciting that it's going round as it is!! I want to use some of it for my final 3rd year performance on my theatre and performance degree if I can, somehow.

I think that was a 50's / 60's era term used for a "cool dude". I've always heard guys who are around my mother's age (she's now 62) refer to other men as "cats".

So what a "cat" in modern terms is a "dude".

Just got back from my Jazz History class, and my professor show cased and played us N.E.W.S. and compared it with the bebop and Cool era of jazz in 40's and 50's,
All 40 cats in the class dug N.E.W.S. and couldnt believe that it was prince, and all said they're gonna look for the album,
I spoke to my professor and asked him about how he heard of n.e.w.s,
he said its being passed around in the underground jazz circuit, he first heard it when one of his own band mates was playing a few licks from West during a break, and couldn't believe it...

about a week ago i was in a cafe called smalls in the lower east side of manhattan, a band called the mike moreno trio, played an excerpt from East, and talked about the album,
so i thought today was kinda a coincidence,
i just googled N.E.W.S. and it's widely popular...
i know back in 03 when it came out people trashed it to bits,
funny how things change...

people that like Jazz and appreciate did not trash it. The people that trashed it were folks on this forumn who insists that Prince only record songs like "Fury" or "Little Red Corvette" which unfortunately is about 75% of this blog

I LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! NEWS!

I was thinking of starting a thread about this cause I never see anyone mention the CD

I went three months without this CD cause I lost it or something, i think its stuck in a phonebook in a closet somewhere, but I still couldnt find it.
So I had to ORDER a new, and it happened to be the last one in stock at Borders, and they weren't sure if I was gonna get it or not.
Luckily it came in a week later.

I just think that it's great to hear that our feline friends are finally getting some kind of education, musically or otherwise. Our cat just eats, shits, miaows and sleeps and I wish he'd get off his butt and study something useful just like the cats in your class have. So are you the only human in the class?

I've said it before and I'll say it again - NEWS is one of Prince's greatest albums. It challenges fans, it's more intricate and deeper than Lovesexy and it takes the listener on a great journey.

and I havent done it in while, but I love how it synchs with The Wizard of Oz
