Did we get our PR rush with musicology? Do you think (for those of us who are 30 and under) finally got are Prince rush in 2004 the way folks in 84 got theirs? I mean...my friends would always say Prince is never going to see the top again and jsut get use to it. As we all know in 2004 P kick a$$ and got down all over this country.
Was that it or will there be another sold out x3 + in some cities? Prime aka The Kid

Nothong will ever compete with the phenomenon of Purple Rain. I was 14 when it was released and old enough and fortunate enough to have experienced it. It will never be created again and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Musicology was exciting and brought him back to mainstream production and media, but it didn't compare with PR because there was nothing like it at the time.

I was only 6 at the time but my brothers were 17 and 19 and I remember everyone talking about it and brotha's were wearing things on there head and driving mortocycles and stuff...I still have and remember buying folders with prince on them for school. I rememeber a little of th erush in 1984....musiocology was nice. Was D & P and Musicology (1991 and 2004) more comparable? Prime aka The Kid

I'm 35 and experienced both . . .
No, nothing compares to the Purple Rain juggernaut - it was simply unstoppable in 1984 and even into 1985. Movie, #1 album, tour, magazine covers, constant MTV and radio play. And, it was all deserved - an honest movie effort and a masterpiece/signature album. Musicology had the public relations aspect covered (magazines, TV appearances, concerts) and the tour earnings were #1 - but something was missing. I think because the album itself was not a masterpiece work, what resulted was media based around "nostalgia". I was living in CA during the Musicology rush, and I got to view both the simulcast concert and Prince on the Tonight Show. Good times!

D & P probably wasn't as big as Prince would have liked, but it was pretty popular. It's totally different from Musicology, though. D & P had overtly sexual songs and videos, such as Gett Off, Cream and who could forget the buttless pants performance. He was still in "I'm gonna do whatever I want and shock you", whereas Musicolgy, while good IMO, is much more tame, so it's hard to compare the two. He totally got away from that image. I think Musicology brought Prince some new fans, and rekindled music love affairs with fans tha went astray, for lack of a better phrase. BTW, I still have my Purple Rain folder that I bought in 10th grade, lol. It's abut 22 years old now.

In 1984-1985 there was a video show that was very popular, it came out of L.A...I can't remember it's name. Anyways, the host was SUCH a fan, he always played atleast 1 Prince video, somedays even 2, on his lil half hour show! [Edited 3/17/07 9:46am]

I agree with everyone else. The PR era was phenomenal to me because there were such great songs before that which made me a Prince fan, but he wouldn't do interviews and I used to admire the music & the mystique. Then it was like "he's doing a movie?" "but he doesn't even TALK!" I was 13 and couldn't wait to see the movie. My friend & I had to have her older sister get us in & we were like through the whole movie. It was like nothing I'd ever seen before. We saw that movie four times in the theater... a couple times we had to sneak in. Sorry Prince... I think I owe u some money. [Edited 3/17/07 9:47am]

Was that it or will there be another sold out x3 + in some cities? I dug the musicology tour and media blitz but I am a Prince fan regardless of whether he's on the top of the charts or in anyone else's good grace's. I will keep an eye on my little hero until the end.

I never could understand Young Prince fans, you missed the Best part of Prince back late 70's to 80's, I kind of feel sorry for them.

You are right, they have the tapes and the music but that is just nowhere near living through an era. I ask people who saw Elvis at the beginning and its clear that my perspective will always be somewhat limited.

as a young prince fan (15) i know what you mean first hand. I missed everything and I wish i was older just for that reason. But lucky enough I was raised by a mother who had the passion for prince back then and then passed it on to me. Although I really wish I could've seen everything first hand, I realize i am lucky enough to be able to see and hear what I have this day in age. I mean, i own Purple rain {thank you best buy} but I don't think you understand the time and sacrifices I MADE to find it! it took me from September to December and I still didn't find it. Lucky enough my cousins boyfriend happend upon it and purchased it for me. I know that I missed ALOT, including Prince as his best. But although I wish I had more, I'm happy with what I can get my hands on. Except, Graffiti Bridge and UTCM? I've never seen either, and I have been searching for EVER plain and simple. I just cannot find either anywhere. And there are also so many songs I've never heard and probably never ever will. But I won't give up and ill still keep looking!

I was only 4 in '84 when PR came out, and I still remember those days vividly. Prince was a GOD...good times!

The circumstances of the world were very very different in 1984..
History never repeats. Savor every passing moment, each unique xperience, because in term of 1st hand accounts, 1ce it's gone, it's gone 4 good.
