A friend of mine thinks that Prince is homophobic... What do U think. The only reason he say this is because his old friend is a Witness too, and HE claims that they condem gays. After all the songs about freedon of spirit and being true, do U think there's any truth behing this. Let's not get heated here, it's just a question, not a statement! Sometimes, the world's a storm...

well,I dont think JWs agree with homosexuality but that doesnt mean hes a homophobic. He just may not agree I think people are quick 2 judge a different opinion. You have 2 also know that 1 JW is not every JW... my 2 cents.

Don't know who their source was but whilst reading The Vault I came across the following tale. In the late 1990s/early 2000s there was the possibility of Prince regrouping The Revolution for the Roadhouse Garden album. A meeting was arranged at Paisley Park with Wendy, Lisa & Bobby Z. Apparently Prince told them that before he would reform the band Wendy & Lisa would have to publically renounce their homosexuality. The meeting ended there, with Bobby Z vowing never to work with Prince again.
Like I say, source unknown. I just read it in The Vault, just because it's in there doesn't mean it's the truth but it does get you thinking. Prince has worked with W&L since so either he's changed his views on homosexuality or the original story was BS.

Prince ain't homophobic. Some of his previously alleged comments towards the subject may come across as immature and maybe misguided, but homophobic he ain't. And those alleged comments are just that - alleged.
'United States Of Division' was a nice affirmation that he is still the Prince that we love and also, his performance with Wendy on Tavis Smiley and the Brits performance with Wendy AND Lisa showed that if he really did make derogatory comments about Wendy and Lisa's relationship (and I don't believe he did) then he realises that his comments were out of hand. Actually, scrap that - he didn't make any derogatory comments about W&L's sexuality. They'd never go back to him if he did! I know I wouldn't if he damned me because of the gender I fucked and fell in love with. I could never forgive anybody who openly put me down because of my sexuality and I can't believe that Wendy or Lisa would either.

When "Graffiti Bridge" came out one reviewer commented on the bad, out of fashion, homophobic joke of having Morris and Jerome hit on each other in the dark... My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I don't see what being homophobic has to do with this scene in the movie. Bascially, Morris was trying to get into a drunken Ingrid Chavez's pants not knowing that Prince had come in and scooped her up and taken her away when the candles got blown out. Jerome then comes back into the room (still in the dark) and he and Morris start to grope each other. The lights get turned on and find out they've been feeling each other up and not the girl. Being as neither of them are gay they were both mortified when the lights were turned back on. How is this homophobic? Was a stupid scene ... yeah. But heck the entire movie was silly, ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I doubt it. I think he recognizes that it's looked down upon with the JWs but back in the day I could have sworn that it was mentioned that he was into watching two women.

Wendy said as much in an interview with John Bream that was published in part in the Minneapolis Star Tribune and in full in an Ohio paper, I believe. There's really no reason not to believe it. It's all right from the horse's mouth.

I don't care what his religion is...if Prince makes ANY homophobic/anti-gay comments, he loses all credibility in my eyes.
He may not be gay, but he's a hop, skip and a jump from it!!!!

That's one of the things that had me upset when I found out he was a JW. Because they TOTALLY condemn homosexuality. And through his songs and personality, I completely changed my view towards a lot of things I was brought up to think were evil.

The above story has been reported so many times and Bobby Z has been quoted on it, and it really isn't hard to believe that Prince would take issue with their sexuality during his conversion to the JWs. Wendy and Lisa have obviously made their peace with him and Prince being the fickle fellow that he is, seems to have calmed down in that regard.

I've read about Prince making homophobic remarks. If he did, I'm not surprised because I believe he is gay himself and refuses to accept it because he is religiously confused. Andy is a four letter word.

Remember also that in early songs he didn't seem to have a problem with it. I'm thinking songs like Controversy & Sexuality where he was pretty much saying that it doesn't matter which side you butter your bread. Opinions change over the years but I'm still not ready to accept that he's a hater.

I don't like the phrase homophbic because a phobia implies 'fear of' and of course that's not true but I do hear that Prince does condemn homosexuality since becoming a JW.

Because as I said, if somebody acted in a homophobic way towards me and was still an active member of a religion that condemned me because of my sexuality, I wouldn't be so forgiving and I'd be interested in hearing Wendy's reasons for happily working with him again. If I ever hear genuine evidence of Prince being homophobic then it'll be bye bye! So far, any supposed homophobia has been second-hand at best.

Uh, I just sat and searched for 20 minutes for the Mineapolis Star and Tribune's "PRINCE: An oral history" where John bream quotes Wendy about it. It looks as if they've taken it down, or you have to pay or something to get access to it. If you want to know the story it's told in Alex Hahn's Possessed the Rise and fall of Prince.

I think Possessed has some anectdotes of him being homophobic, it's not the most reliable book out there though. It states him and W&L arguing and him saying "you're gonna rot in hell because of your sexuality" sounds like a brother and sisters arguing, childish. I always thought Prince's gay act was just a marketing tactic, you know, women often love gay men, it worked for him didn't it? It wouldn't surprise me if he were homophobic. Many people will tell you that he was just a regular kid back in the old days. It's show biz people, he can't afford to be "normal" in any way.

So, that would be yet another (ooh, I'm trying to sell a book) third-hand account then. I don't think Alex Hahn's story is necessarily going to be hard evidence. Again, I'm really not trying to be contrary here (although it's hard given the lack of genuine evidence), however I am genuinely interested in trying to find out the source of the 'Prince/Wendy & Lisa renouncing their homosexuality' story. If I do get hard proof, then not only will I be interested in how Wendy and Lisa were happy to work with him again after his actions, but it will genuinely affect how much I appreciate both him and his work. They might have forgiven him, but I certainly wouldn't.

Hahn used as a source all of Piers Nelson's interview material. That book is a good source, and it tells the same story as the John Bream/Wendy interview. If you have the gumption, pay the star tribune entry fee, or ask if anybody has "Prince: an Oral history" here at the org.

Pre-Purple Rain era, Prince gave people the impression that he might have been a practicing bisexual. Even if it was all an act to shock the media (as Dez Dickerson pointed out), you still have to wonder.
