Which album did Prince spend the most time on?

In your opinion, which album do you think Prince spent the most time on? From coming up with a concept, writing the music and lyrics, playing the music, and tinkering around in the studio.

I was just listening to the Rainbow Children on headphones wondering how much time he spent on this album, 'cause it seems to me that this may be the deepest lyrically and musically he's ever been on one of his albums.

So what do ya think? Rainbow Children, Emancipation, Lovesexy..... hmmm
He is exactly who we thought he was

Probably Purple Rain. I had a 45 min bus ride to and from HS that year and a walkman...played it over and over...every day.

a lot of time and effort seems to have gone into what ended up becoming
Sign O The Times since it went through so many incarnations.

but he did take a year off between 1999 and Purple Rain, so...

and i guess The Rainbow Children must have been a lot of work too as
it's such a complex, layered album and the songs he released prior
to it on the npgmc all seemed to be at least a year old, if not even
older.

so that would leave at least a 1 year gap between that material and
The Rainbow Children.

it's kinda hard to tell really.

Maybe The Rainbow Children? I remember in an interview c.1999 he was talking about his next project being like a "political/spiritual musical" (or something to that effect). I always wondered whether he was refering to what would become The Rainbow Children (released two years later).

Also, Prince was supposedly burned out after recording For You. So maybe not in terms of length of time, but the amount of effort put in...

yeah, i remember reading something about him hating the recording process
of for you since they had an executive producer sit in for that album or
something like that.
