nod Purple Rain was $10 4 me 2
Sign "o" the Times was $22.99 eek

I don't think I found Sign O' The Times anywhere, not that I was looking for it in particular.
Ultimate was $22.99 or more everywhere I looked.

I know that I love all of the tracks of "Purple Rain", but unlike TGE and 3121, I haven't given it any thought as a whole. So most likely, that will be my next order of business.

U will love Sign O the Times nod

I listened 2 The Gold Experience last night biggrin

And I love 3121

I hope you watched in on a big screen T.V.

Because nothing will ever compare to seeing it on the cinema screen and sitting in the darkened theatre as you see Prince's boots on the steps and you hear "Dearly Beloved..."

It was truly an experience!!!!

I think the energy of watching it in a crowd for the first time when PRince was an enigma at his musical height made the movie larger than life for me.

Once I saw it again at home on video, it seemed all too much like crap -- beloved crap, yes, but still ...not a good movie as much as a great never ending campy music video.

Glad you enjoyed it.

For the most part, 3121 hasn't been a hit with fans, but they're comparing it to the past. That's not the path I chose and it sure isn't the way Prince does things. He writes music for a living. He doesn't care about living up to his past accomplishments or surpassing them. He works on improving himself.

I respect that and try to follow his example by viewing each album on its own before comparing them to each other.

Here's my own version of Word Association with each of the Purple Rain tracks

Let's Go Crazy: upbeat & fun
    Take Me With U: laid-back
The Beautiful Ones: passion (with a capital "P")
    Computer Blues: pure 80's
    Darling Nikki: risqué & sexy
    When Doves Cry: uniquely incredible
    I Would Die 4 U: dance-worthy
    Baby I'm A Star: personality!
    Purple Rain: moving

It must be strange coming to Purple Rain for the first time now, it does look very dated with all those people wearing New Romantic outfits and make-up! But back then that is what a lot of people really went out to clubs in - today's fashions have become quite boring and restrained by comparison, sadly. The film really documents a moment in time possibly never to be repeated.

The strange thing is, the music has faired far better and still has quite a timeless quality about it. Prince can play Purple Rain now and still get the same reaction he got then.

One thing that I think really helps the film is that it is set against a quite gritty backdrop, not just Prince's homelife but also the seedy streets of Minneapolis. A bit like Saturday Night Fever, a fantasy set in a gritty reality. That is sorely lacking in Prince's other films, both Under The Cherry Moon and Grafitti Bridge are fantasies set in an unconvincing fantasy backdrop that fail to convince. When it is a concert that doesn't matter, which is why you should definately now try and seek out as much concert footage as possible, Prince really re-invents his music live and takes it to new levels, even quite dismal album tracks come alive in a live setting.

very well written lol

For some mysterious reason, I got "Darling Nikki" stuck in my head, so I decided to place the soundtrack... my first dose of 80's Prince this week.

This album is really well put together, each track is right where it should be.

This is my 2nd time listening to it, but the first time I gave it the same treatment as 3121 and Musicology (listening to it through with no distractions whatsoever, trying to 'feel' it).
There is so much energy in this album that it's intoxicating. I just close my eyes and go through the motions and such. I was dancing in my seat during some numbers. Every track is very different and there's a variety of essences each track has.
Let's Go Crazy starts it up with high energy, but not quite as high as some of the other numbers. Then Take Me With U is more laid-back and it slows down with The Beautiful Ones (my 2nd fav. track after Purple Rain itself). It slowly reverts back to passionate during the end of that song and that passion lasts until the end of "Darling Nikki." (Just for the record, is the last 20 seconds of that song one of those famous 'backwards tracks' I've heard so much about?).
Prince's cockiness stays throughout that those two tracks and he loses that aggressive edge with "When Doves Cry" and I definitely felt a slight sadness in it. The following two songs kept the energy up, but it was more of the fun-loving energy from "Let's Go Crazy", but mulitple it by 100.
"Purple Rain" made my ears tear up at the least, so they weren't streaming down my face like the last few times I listened... and actually that feels good to not be like this cry. I cannot say enough how well it was put together, all of the instruments working together, Prince adding them here and there because he felt they fit. Beyond brilliant. The way it ends is a little blah... but that minute or so goes by really fast, and I think Prince put it there so the song would have a good exit and it'd easy my mind back to reality.

Overall, the album's extremely enjoyable and keeps my focus so well that I feel like I'm in a different state of mind. It's like Prince taking me on a rollercoaster ride that I don't want to get off of.
I have a bigger appreciation for "Computer Blues" and "Darling Nikki". CB is really good with its instrumental work, brilliant Prince at best, and I was singing along to "Darling Nikki" (luckily, I was alone falloff ). It's forbidden & risqué, but I'm crazy about it. (I'd have to be if it got in my head). I'm so glad I followed my instincts and listened to 80's Prince again.
