Playing Vids bought via the NPGMC Has anyone tried to play them for a while? i just tried and they will not play anymore. Does this mean we have wasted our money? Or is it just me and the way I downloaded them on my PC?

To play them you always needed a drm license. When you first played them, they automatically connected to the internet and obtained the license from the npgmc site - and then it gave you the opportunity to save them onto your computer.
If you haven't changed your pc or hardrive, the pathway to the saved licenses should remain the same, so the licenses should still be there and you can still play the videos. But if those licenses have been lost or where never saved or you have changed your pc in someway, then the videos can no longer retrieve the licenses from the npgmc site because it isn't there anymore, and that's the end of playing them. It sucks, I know. | |

With the audio downloads, it was possible (whilst the relevant DRM licence was intact) to burn to disc for private use and therefore 'save' a version for ongoing use which did not rely on the licence in case of computer change severing the link with the licence, or the PC failing to identify the relevant licence.
I have not come across a simple and satisfactory solution that applies to the video downloads to assist people who paid for these to enable them to continue enjoying them. . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift. |

If you upgraded to the new Widows Media Player, the DRM may have been temporarily "lost". Microsoft has a bug fix on their site to rectify the DRM/NPGMC files connection. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot. | |

I have a PC with Windows XP OS. In the same folder my original NPGMC files appear, there is also a folder named License Backup. These should contain all the licenses required to run the audio and video files. There are four files in the folder (there may be more or fewer depending on how many backups you did): drmv2lic.bak, drmv2key.bak, drmv1lic.bak and drmv1key.bak. If you see this folder, try copying it into the same folder as your audio and video files on your new computer and see if that works. | |

Had I known I wouldn't have bothered as I had all my licenses saved and now I can't even get to the drm backup file. I rolled back to WMP 10 and got some of my other vids back just not the ones I actually had to pay for. This blows. And for once it's not a music club screw up it's a bs windows upgrade screw up. . I don't think the npgmc drms are online anymore? I never upgraded to WMP 11 but I did install a new hard-drive and system, and even using the old WMP it tries to find the licenses online but fails. I have the licenses backed up but I can't figure how to point the WMP at them, nor do I know if they'd work since it is a new hard-drive and therefore essentially a new computer to the one they were originally saved on (and of course they were never transferable between computers, the licenses got coded somehow to your individual pc, you had to re-download the licences fresh on each computer you used). [Edited 3/5/07 5:59am] You are correct that a HD rebuild or replace will wipe out the DRMs. But since you backed them up, you should be able to re-unite the licenses. The WMP 11 has some info on this, and should have a link to the proper re-link procedure. The bug fix was intended for the loss that occured during upgrade of the WMP and not HD or OS replacement. Since you have back-ups, you should be in good shape to rectify your files. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot. | |

OK. I found the link to correct NPGMC/Third Party DRM losses when upgrading to Windows Media Player v11.
http://support.microsoft....9589/en-us Click on the above link and then on the link under "Resolution". This will not fix your NPGMC DRMs if you have changed your OS or storage hardware. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot. | |
