It doesn't really matter, but if we don't use the actual release date, what's the point.

I bought the Black album at the time(50Euro in '88!!!)so I think it's fair
I put this album in my list wink

SOTT,BA,Lovesexy is my fav period.
Pr,ATWIAD and Parade a close second.

Controversy
1999
Purple Rain

No other arc in Prince history has this kind of growth from one album to the next. Controversy is sorta the Prince universe gathering itself: Religion, sex, punk politics. 1999 consolidates it all into an apocalyptic statement about partying in the face of doom. Purple Rain is his heart opening up, and remains to this day his most emotional, vulnerable album.

These three records show how to build momentum commercially, develop stylistically, and open up emotionally.

In retrospect, there really was nowhere for Prince to go but downhill from that point on. He'd have another mild aftershock with "Sign o' the Times," and then his mojo peters out.

I never really thought of the "safer" aspect of the Lovesexy period. But DM, Controvery, and 1999 was like him saying I'm not gonna push the envelope, I'm going to shove the mother your face until you hear what I'm saying and tough shit if you don't get it.

Nah, Lovesexy wasn't safe at all. I'm talking about the today P. I think many on here dig P now because he's "safer".

Oh ok gotcha.

Parade - SOTT - Lovesexy

His best period, period.

Parade was messy, no doubt - but that it was messy is no criticism - Jackson Pollack seemed to do pretty well with messy. Kiss rules. Sometimes it Snows in April rules, Mountains rules, The Revolution rules.

SOTT - amazing pop album, amazingly, tour even better.

Lovesexy - the best spiritual album since Coltrane's "Love Supreme", then, amazingly, the best tour that anyone ever did.

Previous periods rather too limited in scope, later, rather too uneven.
