this song is 20 years old now



and after all this time i still dig it every single time it
comes up on my player and i never skip it.

love the words, the music, the delivery and absolutely adore
the way the music swells and rises in the last 20 seconds.

phenomenal song and one of his very best balads imo

I'm obviously missing something in this song. To me its a weak melody over some pretty average production. The lyrics are generic and its only Princes vocal performance that manages to keep my interest on those VERY rare occations I dig out the Lovesexy album.

This is the song that served as the springboard for his ballads for years and years -- it's the O.G. Prince ballad, beyond a doubt.

I remember hearing albums for years after first hearing a boot of the Black Album before Lovesexy came out and thinking, jeez -- that's good, but it's When 2 R In Love part deux.

This song is a slice of heaven. It works better on The Black Album though. The sound of the drum and the bass floating above it with the synthesizer is all keeping with the feel of the album but at the same time the lyrics with Prince's voice is genius. When 2 R In Love is a ballad tailor made for the Black Album.

It's a great slow jam and, even after Prince's style change in 1985, it still sounds like something the "old Prince" would have made. It could have fit in on the "Prince" album.

1 of my favorite Prince ballads. I like its placement on the "Scandalous" CD single.

I agree with the OP, this song has dated very well.

One minor flaw maybe: it fades out to soon. I love that hornriffs at the end, shame they dont go on a bit long.

ive been there thinking that somebody has commented on how this is better than doing it (as i'm in awe of the position i find myself, not shivering though, more like the cat with the cream) and i trace it to this lyric. communication of a moment in a lyric. perfect lyric in finding where temptation has led you.
