FUCKING "DIRTY MIND"!!!!!!

worship worship worship worship worship

So I went out and bought this album again (I miss my cassete version which is still in storage) earlier this week, and I must say it's as amazing now as it was made 26 some odd years ago. The man was a genius and this album proves it. It was also the album where Prince truly found himself and his identity. This is where he moved from Soul-man studio prodigy to badass Rock/Funk outlaw.

I don't wanna sound like a fascist here, but don't call yourself a true Prince and then say you don't like this album. No true fan should be without this album. This is in the top 5 best albums of his career. thumbs up!

And you know what, last night I was watching one of my Dirty Mind tour concerts last night and it still fucking rocks!!!!

Prince got down when him and the band played "Head". guitar Now that was the nasty, funky, dirty Prince that we all liked. Forget about this born-again, Bible-slinging Prince. We wanted some "Head" and this is when he gave it to us. wink

hmmm erm, not exactly. back in 1980 when he did all that, it wasn't the same as nowadays; the fanbase is used to the naughtiness now (and we still got some folks begging prince to be all sluttish/nasty again lol)...but back then? it took people aback for a minute, because he totally deviated from what the fanbase was used to up to that point. they were used to and wanted that "iwbyl"-type stuff.

honestly, i wonder just how many people caught on to the hints of deviancy prince hinted at on the prince album, both lyrically and live on stage. there were a few people, yeah, but i seriously wonder exactly how many truly "got it" when comparing the two albums and not just thinking that he'd lost the plot at that point. it was more like shedding skin than giving folks what they wanted.

Lord knows I've been there! I've still got my original vinyl (which lasts forever if you take care of it).

In the late 1980s when my tape player on my stereo broke (which is usually the first thing that breaks on tabletop stereos), I had to buy the cassette because I couldn't make a tape from the stereo anymore (my previous homemade tape wore out...tapes do that). The one I bought was the one with "Dirty Mind" on one side and "Controversy" on the other side. When that one wore out (tapes have never been a good way to preserve music), I replaced it with separate cassettes of the two albums.

When the price of CD players finally went down in the mid 1990s, I threw all those damn wore out tapes away and bought the CD.

In the 2000s, I got smart (and got some money) and bought a component system rather than a table top stereo. I got a turntable and pulled out my original vinyl which made the CD sound like shit in comparison.

Prince has been around so long, I think the main way he still survives financially is by sales by fans replacing old stuff that wore out. lol

PS: I even had "Controversy" on 8 Track at one time as well as the vinyl. lol

When I first heard stuff from the "Dirty Mind" album and saw the pictures on the album, I was shocked how much harder (music and imagewise) this same guy was that I had seen on "American Bandstand" earlier that year, prancing around in gold satin pants. He still looked fish as hell on the "Dirty Mind" album but he looked like an even "meaner", "madder" bitch than before. It also came through in the music.

However, I had only recently discovered Prince through the "I Wanna Be Your Lover" era so I wasn't really expecting or wanting more of the same because I had not known of him long enough to be expecting certain styles. Also, disco had "died" that year, so a totally different sounding album than "Prince" wasn't really a big deal because everyone was changing after disco died.

honestly, i wonder just how many people caught on to the hints of deviancy prince hinted at on the prince album, both lyrically

You're right about that. I didn't at the time because I was too young to understand but I noticed years later.

I never knew a 12 Inch of "Sexy Dancer" existed back then so I never heard it until probably 1998 or 1999. When I heard it, I was amazed. The long version is very ahead of it's time. The synths and the way in which he played them on that version are exactly the style he was using with The Time when he later developed his "Minneapolis Sound".

and live on stage.

Oh, he opened for Rick James that year. If you are going to open for Rick, you had better do something to get the crowd's attention or Rick will eat you alive. lol

Definitely one of my favorite albums! It's as raw and nasty than anything that Prince has ever done. Sister still puts a weird taste in my mouth and leaves my eyebrow rasied. Come on, how many artists can actually release a lo-fi, demo sounding album like this today? Not too many. It's still a classic record 30 years after it's critical release.

hmmm Well, yeah, come to think of it, I don't think the general public were quite ready to see a new and Punk Rock version of Prince. lol

But my friend/former enemy, TheAudience told me that at that time the chicks were into Prince the most. Probably because he was such a pretty boy. giggle

And plus, Prince was getting into more Rock-oriented styles like Punk, Synth-Pop, and New Wave (worship). Some R&B artists were dabbling in it, but none were quite as ballsy as or ambitious with it as Prince. Interestingly enough a lot of the Punk and New Wave artists were getting into R&B and Funk (Talking Heads, Gang of Four, Public Image Ltd., etc.), but that's a different story. Yeah, Dirty Mind was definitely a radical new sound and style for Prince, but it was something that totally worked. Plus this was when he was trying to cross over into the Pop/Rock market. He didn't quite succeed until the 1999 album, but he was on the right track.

I defy any of you to say that Dirty Mind isn't Punk Rock in essence. It's a short album full of radical, liberal, and nearly anarchistic ideas and sounds fitting into an R&B context.
