For You is the great overlooked Prince album

This is where it all started, but I can't believe how many people overlook this album. It's good from start to finish. Yes, it's lush and 70s-ish, but it has a distinctive quality and the songs are great.

Whenever I put For You in the top 5 prince albums, some people think I'm crazy.

Your thoughts?

It's a nice record.
I won't deny it.
But it's definitely
unremarkable and
there r just better
Prince albums.
I mean, U have
"1999" and "Sign
'o' the Times."
"Parade" and
"Dirty Mind,"
"Lovesexy" as well.

cool

The naff 70s production is forgivable - it's just of its time. What gets on my nerves is that the lyrics sound like a rather immature teenager trying to write like a grown-up.

On "Prince", however, it sounds like an average teenager writing about average teenage things - comes across as more genuine, and it's a much more 'natural' album - "For You" was trying too hard in every way. Not that you can blame him - if I'd had a major label deal when I was 18 I'd go mental!

That said, I think the arrangement on Soft And Wet is absolutely astonishing. The words aren't too bad, either - interesting how he had a bit of help with that one. Even geniuses need someone to keep them on the right lines now and then. smile

I love it. It has the 70's sound I grew up with (although I grew up in the 80's, I was just behind the times! lol )

The songs have an innocence and sweetness to them that makes me feel happy that Prince was so talented at a young age. cool

I love For You, especially So Blue, Crazy You and Baby. The album reminds me a lot of the Leroy Hutson albums from the same era.

Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

I agree this album is underrated. I'm Yours is in my top favorite songs, and I love Baby as well- I can't put the whole album in my top 5 though- not with all that came later.
Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"
They've taken a lifetime lease on Paisley Park ...music
