Video footage of Prince Recording in Studio In the Prince "A Musical Portrait" there is snippet of Prince laying down the bass line to PartyMan in his studio.
That is a part I play over and over again when I watch that documentary. Is there any other video footage of Prince recording in his studio??? "Say it Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud!!!" - Brother James Brown

'The Undertaker' video is shot with the band playing in the studio.
The 'Beautiful Strange' video begins with him (at least supposedly) recording the track in the studio. The same could be said for segments in the first part of the 'BatDance' video, although these appear to be staged. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift. |

In the full version of "Prince - A Musical Portrait" there was quite a lot of footage of Prince in the studio, all from around the Batman time. The bassline he's shown putting down to "Partyman" was never used on any version, (which is a shame coz it's dead funky). There was also footage of Prince & Mavis Staples recording "God Is Alive". & one bit that always sticks in my head is where he's jamming in the studio with the band playing some funky instrumental, Playing a guitar solo with one hand while playing the keyboard with the other! Had to be seen to be believed.

I remember when I first saw the documentary, I knew Prince could play Bass but when I saw him slapping and popping that bass guitar Man!!! I just sat in amazement. Anyone I know that questions Prince's talent I always pop in that video and they normally say Damnn!! He's pretty good.... "Say it Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud!!!" - Brother James Brown

Yeah, the Beautiful Strange video has Prince in the studio. U could tell it's real because the echo effect from the mic is still there when he answers the phone.
I thought that bassline he was laying down 2 Partyman was on the 12 inch remix. I don't have a turntable anymore, so I can't check Also, the rehearsal footage 4 the 1st ave show where P & the Revolution r rehearsing 17 days/RoadHouse Garden is great.

Yes, ain't it a shame that he didn't release it with this bass solo??? Damn, if I could play that I'd release only this solo has a maxi CD!

That is a part I play over and over again when I watch that documentary. Is there any other video footage of Prince recording in his studio??? Yeah there's loads more! In an hour long documentary in the UK around the D&P time, a program called Omnibus on BBC1 showed Prince in the studio and in rehearsals from all periods. This is a great documentary! I only have it on an old VHS and it's wearing out. The version of The Ladder in Lovesexy rehearsals at Wembley Arena is awesome! Also the clip of Prince sitting high up in the Wembley Arena seats directing the band on stage and making fun of Levi's shoes is hilarious! If you all want the truth, it's was a planned documentary that Prince and then manager Albert Magnoli were putting together. It covered the whole Lovesexy tour and into the beginnings of the Batman era. It was supposed to be at least 90mins. long to show what a day in the life of Prince was about. It's too bad Prince put it on the shelf, as it really showcases his talents as a musician as well as a great studio engineer and producer. One day it will see the light, but it will pared down as it will most likely have footage of subsequent years added to it. __________________________________________________

I worked at a production company in Los Angeles during the time that this documentary was being edited. The company was called Limelight, and they're the ones that did the "Sign 'O the Times" concert film.
Apparently Prince was doing this documentary to air on TV, and it was during the "Lovesexy" period, but then an interesting thing happened. Prince ran out of money. It was discovered that his accountant had embezzled all Prince's money. Prince was also preping for a third single and video from the album, and it was going to be "Lovesexy." However, with no money, nothing happened. I've always heard that's why Prince took the Batman project. He had to make some money. Anyway, that's why this documentary was never finished. And I'm not sure who owns the rights to it now. Limelight closed, and I'm not sure who bought the rights to all the footage they filmed. I would guess that Prince owns it now since he released the 15 minute documentary on the music club.

That footage is actually from a rehearsal or a jam session with the band and not recording anything. I didn't know there was footage of Prince in the studio on DVD. That sounds amazing. Now I have a reason to get it. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018.
