Was there ever really beef between Prince and Michael Jackson?

Or was it just all made up by the media?

It was the damn media. I don't think there are any bad feelings between them. They've gone to eachother's gigs, and P has stuck up for MJ before. They might not get along musically, but on a personal level, I don't think they have a problem with eachother.

Okay, when did Prince take up for Michael? When? What happened? (I feel like a bad MJ fan...I'm supposed to know everything about MJ!)

Once on a Interveiw with Chris Rock, when CHris compared the two and said that now Prince is married and seems normal and MJ was the wierd one, Prince responded by saying that it should be the law that the media tell the truth--meaning that the media is portraying MJ to be something we don't really truly know that he is. And that they shouldn't print it, unless they know for sure.

It was during the "My Name is Prince...Again!" Conference in 2000. He took some questions from the audience, and one guy asked, "Who would win in a fist fight, you or Michael Jackson?" After some laughs, Prince said. "He's a lover not a fighter." He then went on to say something about how we don't know everything about Michael, and we just need to wait it out. I don't remember his exact words, but the conference is on HQ.

There is no beef. They're both fans of each others. Prince has defended Michael, even against the allegations as i re-call. But I'm surprised that the media never really asks Michael about Prince. I guess there just so much more to ask since he never does interviews. But i would like to hear what Michael would have to say about Prince. The only time i can think of Prince's name even coming up was when Michael was do promotion for Invincible, and the interviewer said something about Prince moving to Toronto and Michael said something like "Really? Prince-Prince? Wow!" (or something like that)

It wouldn't surprise me if they've talk a lot more often. I mean they do have some similar things. Both being J.W.'s (atleast MJ was....?) and both having fights with there recored labels. *shrugs* who knows...

For the most part,I think they both respect each other. In 1987,Prince even sent Michael a song ("Wouldn't You Love To Love Me") for inclusion on the 'Bad' album.Prince spoke favorably of Michael in his 1990 Rolling Stone interview. However,I think Prince began to resent Michael when he started calling himself "The King Of Pop".The song "My Name Is Prince" has lyrics that are directed at Michael...

big cars and women and fancy clothes
will save your face but not your soul...
You must become a Prince before you're King anyway

I also think Prince didn't appreciate Michael naming his son "Prince".I saw Prince in concert in 1997 and at one point,he talked about "the so-called King gives birth to so-called Prince" (he said this in a rolling-his-eyes type of way, lol). That same line appears on the song "Fascination".

...and 4 what it's worth.

eye went 2 a Prince concert back n the day, when he was ntroducing 'FREAKS ON THIS SIDE'.

there was this dude who could have been the very clone of MICHAEL JACKSON, only he was covered from head 2 toe n multiple colored GLITTER!!!!
eye kid u not! even his face.

only his long black straight hair was regular, but it was styled like Prince's n Graffiti Bridge.
every body there knew he was supposed 2 b MICHAEL JACKSON, plus he had an entourage and he sported the single silver glove.

he acted more like MICHAEL than MICHAEL!
all shy, and reclusive, sheesh!
those of us near him wondered how long would it b b4
Prince noticed 'THIS FREAK!!!'

dude sat right n the front row balcony, NEXT 2 Prince's elevated stage.
when Prince called 4 house lights and this dude lit up like a human disco ball, Prince almost fell over mid-run. He doubled over and dragged the band member known as Rev. somebody' or other, and took him back with him 2 stare at this person.

the MICHAEL freak was pleased with the attention, and gave Prince a shy MICHAEL J. type wave with the silver glove hand.

PRINCE shook his head like...so sad! and said, "and eye thought eye was a FREAK!?
THE FREAKS' ON THIS SIDE!"

yep, we wuz the side that wuz freakin' that nite, cause that comment, though meant 4 the michael clone, ncluded us 2!

LOL!

Well, I wouldn't blame it all on the media. There have been some very public jabs back and forth between Michael and Prince. There have also been moments of mutual support, which makes pinpointing the nature of their relationship all the more fascinating.

As was mentioned before, the "so called King gives birth to so-called Prince" lyric is most certainly a jab at Mike, BUT then again, Prince did sort of defend Mike at the press conference. And remember, Prince wrote a song for the Bad album (which would indicate that he didn't loathe Michael), but later Prince made the comment about how they named the album "Bad" because there "wasn't enough room for the word 'Pathetic'."

And if I remember correctly, isn't there a scene in Moonwalker where Mike asks one of his assistants what Bubbles the chimp is wearing, and the assistant answers, "A Prince T-Shirt". Mike laughs, and repeats "A Prince T-shirt?" condescendingly, as if in disbelief. Years later, Mike attends one of Prince's recent Vegas shows, which would indicate a lack of animosity.

So there have been both cutting remarks and shows of respect from both sides.

I've always felt MJ & camp were peeved because Prince would agree to do things with them (songs/video) then back out leaving them with egg on their face when they tried to make a big deal of it to the media. And let's face it, controversy does sell so the media had a lot to do with it by iterviewing these guys & asking one about the other, I'd get sick of someone asking me about some other person too.. like "I thought you were here to find out about what I'm doing?"

He also called Jackson a "genius" when asked about him on a radio interview during the Musicology tour.

However, the lyrical piece, "my voice is getting higher, I've never had my nose done" from the same era speaks of an ambivalent relationship. And who could forget the story about Prince smashing a pingpong ball straight into Jackson's crotch?

Michael Jackson named his first born son "Prince" now if you don't like someone you don't give your son that name, do you? I don't think there's a feud.

lol I can tell that many of you haven't read the 'DMSR' book lol

In 1986,Prince and Michael Jackson ran into each other at a recording studio and played a game of ping pong.Prince (accidentally?) hit the ball right into MJ's crotch.I assume it was just an accident, lol.
