I believe this was just a throwaway bootleg instrumental around the time he was heavily into the synth-funk productions. But I think it might've been recorded after the "1999" album. I'm not sure though.

I always thought it was just a bit of a throwaway jam type number, prince rogers nelson by numbers.

Isn't that the one that has a lot of bass guitar and then there is a separate version of it circulating with just the bass and no drums or other instruments? Yes, it is really funky...I've always loved it.
