falloff I'll never forget where I was when I FIRST heard/saw his When Doves Cry remake. I was in San Antonio because I had driven there from Dallas to see Prince on the Jam of the Year Tour in 1996. Friday was a great show saw Prince afterwards at a club and had a great time.

The next morning me and my bestfriend are waking up in the hotel room and the TV is on BET or MTV and I hear When Doves Cry, but something's different. I was drifting in/out of sleep but I distinctly remember thinking I was dreaming while I was trying to wake up. I couldn't believe I was REALLY awake watching Ginuwine in an open shirt with doves and shit, singing my man's song. shocked

I'm still hoping it's a dream/nightmare cuz I've NEVER seen or heard that song again, but then again maybe I've blocked it cuz it was so traumatizing.

Laibach's 'The Cross'. The singer sounds like he swallowed a frog and the gothy chorus doesn't help. Still, I wish all the mediocre prince covers were as horrendous as this was.

Actually, except for that little segment during the Minneapolis auditions, nobody has sung a Prince song on Idol.

He probably never gave them permission to use his songs and even after he was on the show, he never will.

One girl (Paris?) sang Kiss last season on one of the later episodes, I think she also sang it on the finale.

Oh WOW! I love LAIBACH! See the thing is they were probably making fun of it. They hate Christianity and fascism, and them both ferociously.

I think the worst Prince cover i have ever heard is Patti Smith's cover of When Doves Cry, she destroys that song. She simply did not have one interesting musical idea about it. I can't even belive she released it it's so awful.

Horrible, but I'm going with Simple Minds' version of S.O.T.T.

Oh yes! Could there have been a more soulless version? Nope!

I disagree with anybody who says that the Tom Jones/Art Of Noise version of 'Kiss' is bad. It actually adds a lot to the song and as much as I dislike Tom Jones' music, he made it more sexy than Prince did.

Yeah, seriously...it doesn't matter what anybody puts down as the worst. This one wins hands down. Unless someone now makes up something to try to be worse than this song. Guinevere?!?! oh shit, that's terrible.

I'm dead serious, listen to it, try to listen to the whole thing...it really is hard to listen to, but funny in an odd way, even for a parody. But it's obvious this guy listens to prince. Ufoclub, is that you?

"Guinevere" was done as a joke by me to test out my Tascam 8-track cassette multi-track recorder in 1994.

The original idea was to imitate Captain Picard from Star Trek singing "Pheremone" lyrics. It was vetoed at the last minute for the absurd King Arthur idea, and I had to do all the tracks myself). I used a tiny casio keyboard but had a live drum track.

All the "hipster" and "emo" kids loved it back then (1994-5). And they hated Prince and his version, thought his (and him) was cheesy. No matter how much I said listen to the real song "Pheremone", they couldn't care less about it. This was the same crowd that then loved Beck and his more comedic tunes.

I had one girl write a fan note all the way from Washington (I'm was in Austin, Texas), I had one guy write from Los Angeles to see if "the band" was signed, and I had one guy in Austin shout the whole thing back to me in the same vocal style...

it was a joke, but these people loved it!

I've always wanted to make a cartoon video for it. And also one for Prince's "Bob George" cause people need to know about "Bob George".

PS, this one guy (who had a somehow popular access cable show in Texas) gave every member of Prince's Emancipation band each a copy on cassette at different points during the later "Jam of the Year" tour. I was cracking up when I heard. They must have been like, what is this shit?

I should dig up the fan mail I got. (before I had email!). It's crazy. they really thought it was a serious (but funny themed) band.
