FCC Complaint: Parent Thinks Super Bowl Will Turn Son Gay

Posted Mar 5th 2007 6:50PM by Michael David Smith
Filed under: Bears, Colts, NFL Gossip, NFL Media Watch, Super Bowl
The Federal Communications Commission received about 150 complaints regarding the Super Bowl broadcast on CBS, and The Smoking Gun has compiled the best of them. Most of the complaints centered around the idea that the broadcast was promoting homosexuality:

As one viewer noted in an e-mail, the "pro-homosexual theme" of this year's event, telecast on CBS, was "disgraceful." The writer added that "just because 6% of the population is gay," porn did not need to be included in the broadcast. Another purportedly offended viewer was concerned that the halftime show would have an unfortunate lasting effect on his son, who "hoped to be a quarterback and now he will turn out gay...Thanks CBS for turning my son GAY."

What's fascinating is that although most of the complaints were implying that it was a pro-gay broadcast, in the immediate aftermath of the game there were complaints that it was an anti-gay Super Bowl. It should be noted that if the FCC heard from 150 Super Bowl viewers, that means about one out of every million viewers lodged a complaint.

This is just ridiculous.

I am tempted to say "footy fan mentality" but not all football fans are meat-head-anti-gay-brainless-gun-nut-wankers, but lots are, and it looks like they all officially phoned in their ignorance.

If the son does turn gay,
I don't think that P's halftime performance is the culprit.

I blame all the tight-ends running around the field during the actual game itself.

WTF? I asked many of my friends about that. They all say that he was not doing that and that Prince was rocking! So, I don't understand why people would think that. I can understand, but come on. Prince is doing his thing on the stage. No sex there. cool

That complaint is so rediculous, that I thought it MUST be a joke! Her son will be gay now, because of Prince's guitar? Is the symbol guitar like a magic wand or something? lol

I'm so sick of this "bad press".

It was already bad enough that the "Superbowl Imagery Questioned" thread is still up and running, but now this...

when will people learn... you don't turn gay because of one little performance... I mean, c'mon. I'm sick of tabloid slander because Prince doesn't need it.

Actually, I don't think he really cares all that much becuase he knows it's not true. And what he knows is all that matters.

Better post my twocents before this gets locked, but I can't helped but think this "attack" has nothing NOTHING to do homosexuality, and more to do with race. It's hilarious, 'cause I believe they're using Prince alleged gayness as a spearhead. The fact that this lil' black dude ROCKED the house has some folks pissed.

I never saw it as a race thing. I saw it more as people remembering all the weird things Prince has done in the past, and still wanting to alienate him for it. They want to keep him in exile for changing his name to a symbol, and acting moody and reclusive. I don't think Lenny Kravitz would be getting these kind of complaints, because he hasn't done the strange career moves Prince has.

Jesus, and I thought he brought the twins along just so he wouldn't have to hear any of that bullshit. What's he gotta do... shag 'em right there on the stage???

Don't get me wrong - a 'gay' superbowl would be fine with me. Hell, next year let's have Elton John and Rob Halford come out and do a duet. But this Prince = gay shit just drives me nuts, 'cause I've been hearing it since 1984!!! mad

Lenny? Save for his most recent work, I think LK went after a white audience from the jump. So yeah, he wouldn't have gotten so much heat. That said, mine was really a passing thought (and the first thing popped into my head). It prolly has no bearing, but it'd be intersting to know where these "complaints" came from (geographically).

Yeah, I'd like to know who was giving the complaints as well. Whoever they are, they're a bunch of prudish idiots. lol

I think Prince's history with blurring the lines of sexuality and gender threatens a lot of people. It doesn't matter how tame he is now, it's been burned into their memories forever.

Or closeted homosexuals.

But yeah, Prince's image throughout the years has some folks still sketched out behind it. But, honestly, the people reading so much into it have got something else on their minds. I didn't even notice it 'til the next day 'cuz it just doesn't seem ike a Pricnely thing to do anymore.

If she had to wonder about her son, the tendecies were there all along.Perhaps she should just accept the fact that he was born that way.

Exactly. And all the men (no women) running around playing with balls. The tight ends are the gay virgins and the wide receivers are the gay whores.

I don't see it having anything to do with race. Sports and it's followers have always had some of the most homophobic people I have seen in my life. I knew they would see Prince as gay and I was hoping he would look gayer than he has ever looked in his entire career at that particular event as sort of a way to give the motherfuckers the finger if they don't like it.

The fact that he rocked hard was great though because they like to classify us as weak little Judy Garland lovers. If Prince had done some weak shit like "Do U Lie" at that show, I would have been ready to personally kick his ass because those dumb jocks would just love to have seen what looks to be a gay person performing what they consider weak music and have a good laugh. Prince beats motherfuckers at their own game and funks and rocks harder than any "straight" person out there. It pisses them off because we aren't the weak stereotypical "sissy" they like to keep us as. That's what I've always loved about Prince.

Most people, when they "switch teams", they usually sneak over to the other side while every one else is being distracted by the half-time show,
i.e. Prince's bombsatic Super-Bowl performance.
