My boss hates Prince!

I just started at this job and today was my third day of work. Everything has been going smoothly, thank God. Anyway, I'm in surgery with my boss and he looks at me and asks me what the guitar pick around my neck says. I tell him it says, "Prince", and he says, "Eww, you like him!" omfg Then, he tells me that years ago, a friend of his, who was a flight attendant at the time, had Prince on one of his/her flights and he was a real jerk. My boss started saying that Prince was a real jerk based off of this story and I said, "I'm pretty sure he can be, but I've never met him, but I've heard stories." He was really surprised and asked me why I like Prince. confused I told him that I appreciate any artist who writes, produces, composes, sings, and plays instruments on almost all of their music. He actually agreed and made some comment about how many current artists and American Idol winners have people doing all that for them, so it's good to have an artist who actually has that amazing ability nowadays. biggrin That made me happy, because I don't really care if someone doesn't like Prince, but they have to show the man respect for the fact that he's a real musician. He could take the easy way out and just pay people to do it for him, but he does his job and that's why I respect Prince. He still doesn't like Prince though. lol

I'm a veterinary technician. I love surgery. We give the surgery patients valium/ketamine IV and then we intubate and put them on isoflurane gas anesthetic during the surgery. We do spays, neuters, dental cleaning, mass removals, and I've been in several orthopedic surgeries (they can take up to 3 hours to complete). Today, we did a hernia repair, a mammary cyst removal, two dental cleanings, and two mass removals on a 150 pound bloodhound. One of the masses was the size of a balled up fist and was filled with this clear fluid that looked just like water. It was awesome. Sometimes, we have extremely aggressive pets who absolutely hate coming to the vet, so we have to sedate them to give them their vaccinations, clip their nails, or clean their ears otherwise they will try to attack our faces. We didn't wear masks for the surgeries today because they were minor surgeries, but I've worn masks before and they really suck because they smell like paper and they get hot when you talk alot. I love my profession! I get paid to play with puppies and kittens everyday. My favorite surgeries are C-sections, because then I get to help bring a life into the world and they are soo cute. Their little eyes and ears are completely closed up and they need you to keep them warm because they can't make their own body heat yet. It's soo beautiful and makes you really appreciate life. biggrin

Interesting story you got there.

But there's a lot to be said about that comment about not many people today doing everything that Prince does for his music.

That's one of the things that impressed me a great deal about Prince to begin with. Actually, his showmanship won me over initially (thanx to the last 10 minutes of Purple Rain)... too bad your boss doesn't like Prince.

I can understand why someone wouldn't, though, but their opinions and what they have to say about him doesn't really affect me cuz I'll usually find a comeback.

Like your boss getting the impression that Prince is a jerk...

sure, I could understand where that comes from, but there's always a logical explanation (or semi-logical) when it comes to Prince.

Yeah, I always see that little glimmer of hope whenever I tell people I'm a Prince fan, because I've never met someone that didn't make a comment about him after I said how much I loved Prince. When I bought my new car, I had just handed the keys to my old car to the guy and then I remembered that I had left my Prince mix CD in the CD player of my old car, so I asked him if I could have the keys back to get the CD. He asked me what the CD was and I told him it was a Prince mix CD that I had made. He looked at me like eek and said, "What do you like about Prince?!?! I don't know, he seems kinda gay." I just told him that Prince wasn't gay; he was a metrosexual, and then, told him how amazing his music is and about the Musicology concert I went to in 2004. People will say how much they don't like Prince or how "gay" he seems, but I can see that little glimmer of interest in their eyes like they really want to know more about the man. They're fans; they just don't know it yet. smile

Yeah, Prince has this way of making it seem like anything is possible. He does that for me all the time. He makes me wonder on and on about him, what makes him tick and how he writes such beautiful poetry-like lyrics and wonderful music.

Anyone in the so-called "baby boomer" generation appreciates music the way it used to be and Prince seems to carry that with him wherever he goes, no matter what city or time period he's in. I get that vibe from my dad. He's not so much into today's music because it's mostly junk to him. I agree to a certain level. I do think that today's music isn't quite what it used to be, at least not like the 90's. I'm an 80's buff myself, even though I was born in the middle of the decade, so that's part of what got me into Prince. He carries that 80's vibe with him all through his music of that time. My dad had me sit through the last 1/2 hour of Purple Rain in an attempt to show me a great artist. I've been a casual fan since, but the SuperBowl turned me into a huge-mega fan.

Right now, I feel like I'm completely going insane on the matter cuz I've seen Purple Rain thru 5 times this week and it's starting to lose its edge. Actually, listening to TGE kinda changed the way I see things. I've yet to see where I stand... is Prince losing his appeal, the overall effect he had on me from the get-go? I really hope not cuz w/o that effect, what is he to me?

My focal point of the last 5 weeks and nothing more... I'm seriously off topic here, but I gotta get back on my "feet" if I'm gonna survive as the huge Prince fan I am now.

:rolls eyes:

I'll clarify this again.

I was a casual fan after seeing the movie...

I turned into a mega-fan after the HalfTime show... I think I overdid today... but having not listened to TGE made things a bit easier, I guess that was still a little too much for to make all at once.

I feel like I should go cold-turkey for a couple of weeks, but I'm afraid that if I do, I'll have lost the light I saw in Prince at the start of my journey. I like the feeling I get when I think about him, how there's almost nothing he can't do and he makes me think about all different kinds of things in a whole new light.

Hopefully, I didn't ruin the "novelty" value I saw him in by overdoing it.

You're just anxious like many Prince fans. We all want Prince to put out another album soon, because that's what he does. He's put out an album almost every year of his career, an amazing feat for any musician. Honestly, I didn't watch "Purple Rain" until about 3 years ago, but had 90% of his music and had watched "Grafitti Bridge" and parts of "Under The Cherry Moon". I already respected and admired Prince before the film, but "Purple Rain" made me forever a fan. His passion for his craft is what mesmerizes me the most. He seems enamoured by music and that really fascinates me. Unfortunately, I get bored with things very quickly, so I have to find something and/or someone to be extremely interesting to grab my attention and hold onto it. I adore people who are passionate about anything. It doesn't even matter what it is, just so long as it's something that if it was taken out of their life would make them feel a little incomplete. I'm really working on becoming a more passionate person. So far, the only things that I'm really passionate about are Prince, elephants, working with animals, tattoos, Gaudi architecture, and Salvador Dali. Now, I've gotten off topic on my own thread. lol Keep exploring Prince's career and you won't be disappointed. biggrin

uzi rolleyes

I've been a fan longer than you've been alive. Falling in and out of love with Prince is a big part of being a fan. You've picked one of the most prolific recording artists ever to become enamoured with (and also one of the most bootlegged) so there is always something new to discover. I've been sick of Prince/ O+> numerous times but I have always been drawn back by his incredible music and ability. Stick with the music and you can't go wrong. Hopefully you do lose the novelty aspect and appreciate his ability as something more substantial, rather than something that your interest wanes in after 5 weeks

Start carrying around an extra "Prince" guitar pick,
so that the next time you're in some kind of open surgery, when no one is looking, "accidently" drop it in.
That way,

Thanx for the words of encouragement... I have yet another reason to love Prince fans since they're always there to help each other through the good and bad times.

I think I might have worn myself down by doing too much at once. When it came to Prince, spontaneoity has always been a key element. I rushed into things because I felt that I had to, either to experience it or get over a bad feeling in my gut. If anything, I need to slow down and take things one step at a time.

Rome wasn't built in a day, neither were Prince's songs. I guess I just tried to keep up with the other fans who've been and done places/things that I haven't experienced... I know I need to take things one at a time, meaning I need to define my feelings of each Prince song or album b4 I compare it to anything else... and set up false expectations for myself. I feel like Prince's music is something I need to observe for some amount of time under a magnifying glass, taking the time to appreciate the work he put into it.

a little side note: hang on guys because I'm going to post a thread regarding my feelings about Prince's most recent album 3121. I think you'll find my take, if anything, interesting.

You don't have to do that. I've come to realize that there are a lot of Prince fans who have been following him since he started, which is impossible for someone who wasn't born at that time to do. I was born in 1981, so there's no way my parents were going to let their 4 year old go see "Purple Rain" or a Prince concert, because he was pretty adult themed at that time. My parents were not going to let me listen to "Darlin Nikki" or watch Prince and Appolonia do it on a bed of straw, just wasn't going to happen. Now, he's a little more family friendly, because he's toned down his sexual side a bit. I stopped trying to catch up with many of the long-time fans a long time ago, because I'll never be where they are. I missed all the hot concerts and releases of the majority of his albums. I just went to my first Prince concert in 2004 and I can only imagine how amazing he must have been back when Purple Rain hit. I'm still finding unreleased songs and that's great, because I have something to do until the next album drops. I like to go to this old record store in town because they have a lot of Prince on Vinyl and some old Prince concerts on CD. Keep exploring. biggrin

Again thanx. At least now, I have a better idea of what NOT to do.

For many reasons, Prince stands out for me above the rest and his unique individuality and variety makes it hard for me to see why someone wouldn't like him or at least try to get into something he has to offer. [this goes back to the start of this thread]

In a lot of things in life, I've been a bit of a "late bloomer" by getting into things that have been around for a while, discovering it for the first time. [The first time this happened was with a young boyband that I got into for a year when they've been around for a couple of years already, but they broke up a year after I became a fan].

With Prince, my journey with him has been a complex one, and it's anything but boring. There's always something new to discover about him, whether its his music or about him personally. I guess you could say that I went through a similar funk that he did during his years as prince. As he became addicted to recording in his studio and constantly releasing more music, I became addicted to his music, taking it all in at once and attempted to make sense out of it. My reasons for doing so are probably endless... but at least now I'm learning from my mistakes.

I came to a realization today. Although I was born in the mid 80's, I love a lot about that decade, music and movies to name a few things. Movies like Ferris Bueller and the Breakfast Club are 20+ years old, but they're timeless.
Prince is the same way, but there's a catch.

Of all of the things that I love about the 80's, Prince is the only one that has survived to this day and age, still doing what he does best. Movies are frozen in time and other groups and singers have broken up and went out of style. Prince is still around and he's nowhere near out of style. He's constantly changing and evolving and time is not a factor. His music still has an effect on me no matter how old it is and it makes me feel good that he's always doing something new.
