Morning papers

I know Prince has a lot of symbolism in his songs, and I am just awful at reading into lyrics. I was wondering what the morning papers symbolized, or represents in the song. I know the overall feel of the song is wanting to date someone that is a lot younger, but would anyone care to break it down a tad for me? Thanks a bunch.

IMO...It's about Prince and his young love interest just enjoying each other before the gossip columnists get wind of it,hence the title of the song.

I agree. And that's what makes the song so remote and unrelatable. Everyone suffers from gossip, but few experience actual badmouthing in newspapers.

The song is sort of indicative of the gulf between Prince's celebrity lifestyle and the average listener, and how seemingly unaware he is about the ramifications of class, privilege, and fame.

On the other hand, they say you should write what you know, in other words, your own life. If Prince wrote about how life is hard working down a mine, he would be open to criticism of what he knows about it. I may not have experienced the subject matter of The Morning Papers but it doesn't stop me enjoying the song, perhaps because I can fantasise myself living his life, a lot easier than he can imagine living mine I expect.

I still can't down with this one. I like the guitar solo and I dig it musically but damn the lyrics seem still a little nauseating to me. There was this thread like two years ago where I talked about how uncomfortable the song made me. Prince liking his women young is one thing but I just thought this was a little too "dirty old man" for me. Maybe it's just how this ties in with the whole theme of the album and how the princess is not nearly of "legal age" and Prince singing about age not being more than a number when it comes to love. I'm just of the mind that it is a little more than that, that a 16 or 17 year old girl should not be dallying with a 35 year old man. But hey what the hell do I know? I just know that I have two daughters and I would be really really uncomfortable with them dating a guy in his thirties if they were still in high school.

This is the only Prince song that comes to mind that I feel like I have kind of a moral issue with.

It does seem to be an occasional theme with Prince, having a relationship with a young girl, most likely a virgin - such as in Adore "Was I the first? Was I your every fantasy?" and look at Lolita.

I think Prince is just being honest, the ultimate tempation for him is a young pretty girl. Anyway, in the UK the age of consent is 16 so perhaps it doesn't seem so bad to us.

The Lolita syndrome is pretty basic human nature stuff, and it's a staple of rock 'n' roll--hell, it IS rock 'n' roll. Sting did it with Don't Stand So Close To Me. Stray Cats did it with Sexy and Seventeen. Prince's Morning Papers has neither the moral torment nor the shameless abandon of the first two examples. It's defensive, cerebral, too busy condemning the press to express any of the passion and confusion that attends such a taboo situation. It's more concerned with other people's reaction than the affair itself. That's what makes it off-putting, I think. There's too much rationalization, not enough confession. Compare it to Sister, which wastes no time justifying itself or worrying what others think.
