Superbowl Should Have Beens

OH! Not only did my team lose but P did not sing anything that I wanted to hear. I wanted to hear I Wanna Be Your Lover, Raspberry Beret, Alphabet St., Sign O' The Times, 7, My Name Is Prince, Cream, Supercute, VaVoom, oh hell you what I mean. Instead we got the usual suspects Lets Go Crazy & Purple Rain. Honestly, P has too many songs to sing to do covers. I have had enough of tivoing Prince performances, it's always the same 2 damn songs. mad

This performance was on a world stage for millions of people, most of them hadn't seen Prince perform in 20 years, if ever. He performed three of his best songs for this particular setting, along with a couple of classic covers that most everyone knows and can appreciate. The Best of You was a kick ass cover that has received great reviews from everyone I've talked with. While we've seen Prince give better technical performances, on this night, on this stage, along with the rain, this fan of 23 years doesn't think it could have been any more perfect.

I thought the halftime show was fabulous. He played Purple Rain.a song that the whole world knows him, he played Proud Mary. A song Everybody knows and most like, and then he played Baby I'm A Star,a song that the audience could get into, and then played two songs he's never covered, letting the crowd know that there's a lot more to him than Purple Rain.
Too bad Prince didn't play for 3 hours and let the football teams play for 12 minutes

No, it wasn't. This has been discussed so many times before. Stop using that expression.

I didn't say that "everyone" in the world saw it, but people all over the world did watch it, therefore it was a "world stage". It was by far the most watched Prince performance ever.

Don't know where you're from (don't care), but the SB and WS are World Stage Events. Giddy Up!
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

You care about Prince though, dontcha? Why do people get so annoyed when it's called a world stage. It's called a world stage because it's broadcast in so many countries, not because so many people outside the U.S. care a flying hoot about the Super Bowl. Either you watched it or you didn't, who cares what it's called. It featured Prince, who by the way, is American.

Superbowl has less watchers than your average American sitcom. Also there's a very good reason for it, it is broadcasted in the middle of night in Europe, Africa and Asia. More people were likely to catch Prince's performance on YouTube if they were interested. Prince's most watched TV performances have been some of the MTV Awards performances he did in the early part of the 90s.

"Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005 was watched by 93 million viewers in total, of which 98 percent were in North America . Approximately half of the remaining 2 million worldwide viewers watched from the United Kingdom."

It was nice that you have the viewer ratings from the 2005 Super Bowl, but the one Prince performed on was the 2007 game. Although the results may not be much different, I'm still willing to bet this was the most watched Prince performance on live television ever. Anyways who gives a fuck, Prince kicked ass, in my opinion, and the World Cup blows.

I don't think I'd have had him do anything different.

I could argue, though, that instead of doing that Foo Fighters song (a few of their fans have been giving him grief cuz of it and I hate that), he could have done on his other popular ones off of 3121 or "When Doves Cry". They had the "doves" flying during Purple Rain, so that's why I let that slide. Looking back, I think adding "Best of you" to the mix threw off the energy he built up. I think during it, I actually lost interest during the song :gasp:. I know. He can cover a song, but it can never compare to his own stuff.

The best thing he did was save the best for last. I wouldn't have changed a thing about those last 4-5 minutes.
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

My nachos intake should have been much more conservative that night.

The lingering ramifications are still being felt by those closest to me.

- "When doves cry" is one of my fave Prince songs, but it´s hard to see him doing a great live performance of it. In the ones I saw, the song was edited or Prince didn´t want to play the guitar solo. The only great version I know is from the Nude Tour Japan, where he put an awesome bass and played a great piano solo.

- In this case I have to agree with Bart. Here in Rio the TV started to show it just after the Halftime in a not-so-popular channel. It was like 12:30 AM here. They only showed the concert after the game ended, very late. Needless to say, nobody commented it at the office on Monday. Football and baseball aren´t popular here sad

Never heard of Best Of You, I thought it was some new crappy song he came with. Never the less it was too damn slow & so was Purple Rain for Superbowl. And I really could care less who likes the songs, as far as I'm concerned he performed the same damn song as always & and some extra bs on top of it! What is wrong with singing his hits like She's Always In My Hair or U Got The Look? I did not tune in for him to sing covers (that shit is bananas). If ur gonna rock the house (then do it, damnit). Prince fans tuned in to see him performing fuckin' Foo Fighters & Tina Turner shit (BABY BYE!)

Beau, we are tired of Purple Rain songs because we are fans for years, and we have several versions of them. Think about the non fans. They only want the songs they know. It happens to every artist, from Deep Purple to Elton John...

The best parts of the superbowl were Hester's opening return for a TD and Prince's performance. Any one knows he aint gonna do an unknown song on a grand stage such as the Superbowl. I thought he kicked ass. The Bear D was the most dissapointing to me.

U got the look might have worked,,but not she's always..that song is too slow..and he rocked the joint w/best of u...what are u talking abou? I never even heard the song until P did it...and I loved it...I think P wanted to do songs w/alot of guitar in them, so he could show off his skills, plus it would have more of a rocknroll feel to the show....dance numbers like kiss or raspberry beret would not have worked. And Purple Rain is the perfect ending..w/the whole chorus and guitar solos....
