How can we improve ATWIAD? Easy:
1.Hello 2.Paisley Park 3.Manic Monday 4.Raspberry Beret 5.Condition of the heart 6.Pop Life 7.America 8.Girl 9.She's always in my hair 10.Temptation I've always thought that the ATWIAD B'sides are much better than some of the tracks which appeared in the official version; also, Prince should have keep Manic Monday for himself; for me, ATWIAD is Prince "lost album", it could have been much better.

"WE" cannot improve it. It needs no improving. Yes, the b-sides are amazing but I love the fact that they are b-sides-- it just added to the awe and wonder of an artist who made such a great album yet still found time to pull off ncredible b-sides that made my head explode.
The fact that you even left off Tambourine from your list should be a reason to kick yo ass...twice! huh. [Edited 2/25/07 6:56am]

The album really does not need improvement
BELIEVE ME! Hm, I really do not like Hello that much, it is good, but I still prefer Tambourine... [BOOT REQUEST SNIP - Please see the top of this forum! - BananaCologne] [Edited 2/25/07 7:17am]

Let's see pal, when I say "improve" I am not talking about the talent of Prince or how bad or good one of his songs is, I was talking about one SPECIFIC record (ATWIAD) which I think(as a LISTENER or REVIEWER) it's the ONLY Prince record that suffers from a somewhat erratic song selection (The B-Sides and the material who was writing for other artists at the time are better than the songs that finally appeared on ATWIAD). I was not talking about talent, it was just my opinion. But if you think that I'm bitching or insulting Prince or looking like an intolerable asshole, then sue me or ask to the moderators to ban me. And if you think that WE cannot talk about one Prince's song or record because we haven't write it, then tell me one think: why did you enter the org after all? To say everytime: "all Prince songs are good, all Prince songs are good"?...ridiculous. [Edited 2/25/07 9:20am] [Edited 2/25/07 9:21am] [Edited 2/25/07 9:22am]

I always thought the song "Around the World in a Day" sounded unfinished. Like it's almost (but not quite) a really great song. Personally, I think the tempo should have been more up-beat with a chugging train-like rhythm and maybe some jangley acoustic guitars to punch things up as well.
And yeah, "She’s Always in My Hair" should have made the album. Probably with "Tambourine" relegated to b-side status.

I think "Temptation" should have been left off the album entirely...Keep "Tembourine" because it adds to the quirkyness of the album...And "Around The World..." should have taken on the funkier qualities of the live version...But I co-sign on "She's Always On My Hair"...Why on earth that song was relegated to B-Side I have no idea..

Personally, the only 'improvemnets' I'd like to have seen for ATWIAD would have
been a slightly altered running order, and the addition of 'She's Always In My Hair' (I think 'Temptation' should've been shortened to make room for it rather than dropping any of the other tracks... I can live without the silly talk with God bit at the end!)

"Teacher Teacher" would have fit well into the supposed Psychedelic Rock mode. So would "All My Dreams".
What would a compilation of Prince's psychedelia be? "3121" would fit. "3121" is completely in the Beatles mode of introductory mystery song that beckons you into a surreal musical adventure. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Around the World in a Day is perfect the way it is

Actually, I think Around The World In A Day IS one of the few albums that
would've benefitted from a minor tweaking. 1. The album has a really slow start. Opening with the title track is fine, it sets the psychedelic beatlesque mood really well. But then following that with Paisley Park (great song, but quite slow and plodding) and Condition Of The Heart (great ballad, but 3rd track in is way too early for that 2 minute weird-out piano interlude that precedes it) 2. The ending of Temptation. Not my favorite track on the album I must admit, but all that talking over the outro just comes off as silly. Particularly the bit where God kills him for not knowing the difference between Love and Sex. Editing off those 2 minutes of rambling would make room for... 3. She's Always In My Hair. Great track, deserving of a place on a 'proper' album rather than just being relegated to a b-side. I suspect the reason it was left off was because it uses a synth line that had already been used on the previously released 'Sex Shooter'. That point aside, it's fits perfectly with the psychedelic vibe of the Around The World In A Day album. So there you have it, just one edit, one addition, and a slightly re-jigged running order would have just improved an already great record IMHO.

The addition of "She's Always in my Hair" and the trimming of "Temptation" would have made a much stronger Side 2. I would have placed "Raspberry Beret" as Track 2, and then left the rest of Side 1 the same.

I would have placed "Raspberry Beret" as Track 2, and then left the rest of Side 1 the same. Putting Raspberry Beret as the second track was exactly what i was thinking too. I'd also be inclined to put Condition Of The Heart as the last track on side one (due to it's extended instrumental piano intro). Plus, Paisley Park kinda fills the traditional 'slow 3rd track' configuration of a lot of Prince's albums. My ideal tracklist would look something like this... side 1: Around The World In A Day (3:25) Raspberry Beret (3:31) Paisley Park (4:41) Tamborine (2:46) Condition Of The Heart (6:46) side 2: America (3:40) She's Always In My Hair (3:27) Pop Life (3:42) The Ladder (5:26) Temptation (5:19)

I agree on closing side 1 with Condition of the Heart. I might plug "She's Always in my Hair" as track 3 rather than 2. I think Pop Life works well after America, and "She's Always in my Hair" is similar sonically to America, so it might work better between Pop Life and The Ladder. I'd almost be tempted to place an edited Temptation at the end of Side 1, plug Condition of the Heart 2nd to last on Side 2 then close w/ the Ladder... But i'm not sure The Ladder is a strong enough song to close an album, especially since it would draw obvious comparisons to Purple Rain had it been in that position....

Temptation would be obvious choice to bump, but it just doesn't seem to work on side two. I also thought about ending the album with The Ladder, but I agree that putting it in the 'Purple Rain' position would be unfair on the track. I like ending side one with Condition Of The Heart and I think adding it to side two would be a mistake (as it would put two ballads together at the end). I think you may be right about swapping Pop Life and She's Always In My Hair around though. side 1: Around The World In A Day (3:25) Raspberry Beret (3:31) Paisley Park (4:41) Tamborine (2:46) Condition Of The Heart (6:46) side 2: America (3:40) Pop Life (3:42) She's Always In My Hair (3:27) The Ladder (5:26) Temptation (5:19) I definitely think neither Hello, Girl or Manic Monday would've worked on the album. Well, Manic Monday has the right vibe, but it's a 'Girlsong' (do you honestly think Prince would sing about "kissing Valentino by a crystal blue italian stream"?)! Actually all this kinda 're-imagining' of prince's albums used to be a little pet project of mine. The vast majority of his albums I wouldn't change much (no more than I've suggested here with ATWIAD). There are a few albums that I wouldn't change one bit, and there a few which I would actually alter quite drastically! (I wonder who can guess which albums fall into which category?) The only thing I can think of to improve it is to fix the parts of "Tamborine" where he says "Trampoline".
I think there are also parts of "Raspberry Beret" where the backup singers sing "buy" instead of "find".

Girl could potentially be an album track, but I don't know what it would replace... There's nothing I would kick off in favor of "Girl." Presumably had he decided to keep Manic Monday the lyrics would have been altered.... I'm not sure when it was recorded, but I think "Neon Telephone" might have been a nice fit. And how about "Desire" from The Family album? I also liked it and thought Prince should have kept it. It has a bit of an ATWIAD vibe to it.
