it is not a fucked up thing to say. I may be surprised to find out that someone doesn't know that Prince plays guitar, but to have an adverse emotional reaction is absolutely ridiculous. again, do you have nothing else going on in you life that your emotions are wrapped up in what other people know about something that has absolutely no bearing on you, society or life whatsoever, especially something as trivial as Prince playing guitar.

I don't see how finding this ridiculous precludes me from visiting this site as a Prince fan. Had he said he was surprised that people don't know Prince plays guitar, that would be understandable, but "tired" of people not knowing it, as if everyone's life should be warpped around knowing or remembering every detail about Prince just because his is, is sad.

Ok people get tired of things, right now Im tired of being sick. So I guess I should be surprised Im sick ?

nice reading comprehension. I'm not quite sure how you could come to the conclusion that I equated being tired of something as the equivalent of being surprised and can thus be used interchangeably. nice job, though, exhibiting your ability to compose specious arguments.

I can get not being a fan of the man's playing style, or even outright disliking it. Or not realizing he plays drums or piano even. But not realizing he plays guitar? What the hell? Even those who use 1999 and Purple Rain as their point of reference should have figured that out a while ago.

On the other hand, those who are using the Diamonds and Pearls era, the last time he was really commercially big, as their point of reference can probably be forgiven. Not so obvious then that he played anything, and easier to dismiss him as an MJ-style song-and-dance man.

Yeah, that's funny...of course we know that he plays guitar like we know 2+2=4 and it seems weird that other people would be clueless. But it's like someone saying they didn't know John Lennon played guitar...they just aren't into music that much and are oblivious.

confused 'I didn't know Prince played guitar'. lol The last dumb Prince question I got was from a friend of mine. We were eating breakfast at "Waffle House" at like 3 in the morning and it was the week before the Superbowl. He looks at me, as I'm stuffing my face with buscuits and gravy, and asks, out of the blue, "What's Prince's real name?". I had to give him my, "Are You Fucking Kidding Me" look? He got real nervous, because some people interpret my RUFKM look as, "Oh shit, she's about to stab me in the face with that butter knife". After the dirty look and rather uncomfortable silence that followed, I said, "Uhh, his name is Prince." He was like, "Oh, because I was watching Sportscenter and they said his name was Prince Rogers Nelson." I started laughing and told him that that was his full name. He then commented on what an awful name it was, and I said, "That's probably why he's known as just 'Prince'. We laughed and continued on with our meal. I really surprised myself that night, because I don't normally get that bent out of shape when people make their little comments about Prince, but I found it to be such a stupid question (in the form that it was presented in), that I couldn't help but be a little pissed off, especially since my friend knows that I'm a huge Prince fan. Man, I'm really hoping nobody ever comes up to me with this above statement, because I'll have to just look at them and say, "Two words, 'Purple Rain'. Two more words, 'Rent it', now have a nice day."

What the hell does it matter what other people know or think?

The fewer that "know" about Prince, the easier for you it'll be to get tickets! wink

Besides, albums like Parade or Purple Rain, which he's most known for are infinitely superior to dreck like Musicology or 3121...maybe it's better for you that they don't know much.

fortunately I have never had this happen to me, but if it did, I am one of those people who sometimes their facial expressions have a tendency to beat the words out of my mouth, if you know what I mean, and I am sure I would have one of those "are u completely stupid" looks on my face b4 I could ever say anything! nod

I saw this comment in the foo fighters myspace page, I read some comments after the superbowl. I wrote the foo fighters a private message kinda laughing that some people really knew the coolness of him singing Best of U, and some dont even have a clue. I guess its ok if some r ignorant to this fact. Its the ones that claim to know alot about music that get on my nerves.

Good point. All I know is that whenever he plays Purple Rain for some concert appearance that he keeps setting the bar higher for himself, doing better and better guitar solos along with it.

That's funny... cuz during the SuperBowl, I had that same comment in mind.

"I didn't Prince could play guitar that way".

So sue me, that performance was what made me cross the threshold from being a Prince fan every now and then to being a HUGE Prince fan 24/7.

Back then, I hardly knew anything about him except that my dad thought I should watch him in "Purple Rain" even though it was already half over. In the past 3 (almost 4) weeks, though, I have come a long way and I've learned a lot.

The fact of the matter is, is that there's almost nothing that Prince can't do. And no matter how much I think I know, there's still so much more to learn about him and that's come to be one of my favorite things about him. He's full of surprises and I never know what I'll find until I see it for myself.

I hate that. First of all, I can't stand people who want to chat about P before they get the info and then think they got all the answers and want to debate about him (GET OUT OF HERE)!. And then those who only go to concerts just to be nosey (STAY HOME U FREAK)! Me, I'd much rather avoid chatting with non-P fans/fams unless they are interested in the knowledge.

what do you care whether people know he plays guitar or not. is your life so empty that how you feel is affected by what people know of Prince? eek

Yes I have indeed endured times when my life feels pretty empty, and music has been the tool that I used to feel that void. Although I don't believe how I feel is affected by what people know about Prince. For the most part I'm just surprised how many of his talents still seem to go unnoticed. For example I was pretty upset that Warners did not let P release The Undertaker CD to guitar player magazine, had that happen then maybe his guitar skills would have been appreciate by a wider audience, but it's not like my life is all fucked up because of it.

That's hilarious. What is Prince's real name? Actually, at first, I wasn't sure if that was his real name. Actually, I didn't know he even had a last name, everyone refers to him as Prince, his name was one-word, like Madonna, lol.
That's such a good name for him, though. He's pop royalty and he sure acts like a prince, but he's so much more than that.

Have in mind that the younger generation still has as a reference the Kiss video.

That video came out in early 1996. I don't really think 'the kids' are overly familiar with it or use it as a jumping off point for his musicianship.

Granted his guitar playing isn't as respected as it should be by the world at large, but that's also due in part to him being invisble to the world at large for the last twenty years and releasing music that is anything but guitar driven.
No hard feelings.

Somebody asked me that crap after the superbowl "What is his real name?" I said "Prince" and they said "Isn't his name Roger?" I almost had a fit

It really baffles me that anyone would question him being a gutar player. Purple Rain still gets played on the radio
