Prince and "fans"

So I was watching an interview and he doesnt like when people are called fans. For short it means fanatics. I dont want to be known as a "fan" if he doesnt like that. So what could replace the word "fan"?
Soul mate-One of two persons compatible with each other in disposition, point of view, or sensitivity.

Friend-A person whom one knows, likes, and trusts.

Admirer biggrin

I never use the term "fan" 'cause it's a little out there... I always say admirer.

I don't like the word FAMS, sounds corny, so I'll stick to what I know "fan".

This is one of the most hilarious things about being a Prince fan.

The actual fanatics (the ones he was referring to) started calling themselves "FAMS" which is short for family.

This in no way, diminised the level of fanatacism they were guilty of, nor did it make them any closer to Prince in the Rockstar/Fan relationship. But they carried on and on for years calling themselves "FAMS" and many continue to do so today.

I'm a Fan. I've always been a "Fan", and there is still some level of fanaticism I feel over Prince--I mean I buy his shitty albums along side his terrific albums for god's sake. But identifying as a "FAM" would change nothing. I mean, am I ever going to be invited to Prince's house for thanksgiving? For his wedding? Would he let me sit and dine with him in a restaurant if we had a chance meeting and I identified myself as a "Fam"? No, of course not. He won't even sign autographs, most of the time.

So when Prince goes about reinventing the English Language to meet his silly psude-psychology, I roll my eyes and carry on. I just find it hilarious those folks who don't. The NPGMC site was hilarious in the sense that when Prince gave up cursing, even those bastards gave up cursing. PEOPLE WAKE UP! Appreciating music doesn't mean you have to follow like clone. CURSING is the only thing that helps some people cope with life! rolleyes

The fam doth protest too much!!! You can come out of the closet ... we all know really. I bet you have a secret shrine at home and a scrapbook of screenshots from NPGMC chat when you sent a Paisley Park Mod a private message offering to give up cursing and read the New World Translation if Prince would call you.

Why didn't all the "FAMS" change their given names to symbols too when Prince changed his to prince ? Some could have been (^) or (_!_) or 8===> or \./\./ or (.) (.) Oh, that's right, you chose an emoticon to identify yourself jerkoff
I'm a fan but don't need "politically correct Prince-speak".

Interesting question. Since I have a LOVE 4 music that has NOTHING 2 do with being a fan, I've nevered considered myself a "fan" of any musician. I love music and I dig people who create music among other forms of ART.

I consider myslf a sports fan, I follow all of the Chicago teams in true FAN fashion but I cannot equate my following the Bears (4 example) 2 my LOVE 4 music. It is in no way comparable.

I would NOT say that I'm a fan of Prince or any musician. It's almost like being an expert in one's field. U cannot be really good at what u do unless u understand what it takes 2 be good. In the case of music, Prince is the BEST so why no peep his technique? At least that's the way that I view it.

Anx

when i'm just kinda casually enthusiastic and having fun collecting prince stuff, i consider myself a FAN.

when i'm at a show right in front of the man and he's kicking my ass with a guitar solo, then i do a jeckyll and hyde and i FAM out.

there's room for both! lol

I believe there was an interview where he said he likes to think of his real fans as "friends" not fans.
