Songs that Define Prince......

Prince creates so many different types of song.
Not just in different genres, but more importantly in closeness 2 his style, his image, or his heart.

So with this thought in mind, what songs do U think define Prince?

I think...
"...because no-one gets there alone." - "...I like the floor. It's the only thing that seems real."

Come - Princes sexiest song IMO and a great 10 minute romp thats full of superb horn work and serious chillout melodies. Its just so...Princey

She Gave Her Angels - another Mayte moment. And one of Princes best examples of blending beauty and power.

Controversy - the inspiration 4 this thread. Superb lyrics, excellent hooks and great thumping beat. Just what U need 2 dig one of Princes most important songs.

The only song you listed that defines Prince is Controversy. That other shit listed isnt Prince..thats Prince in his fat Elvis phase. At least you've got THE definitive Prince song up in there. Controversy.

Well I have to admit it kinda kicks the other twos butt of the definition thing, but "fat Elvis phase". Just thinking about the comparison makes me wanna laugh and puke at the same time...

Wish it was possible...sad

Oh I don't know about that RD I think the Come is a valid choice. He's always talking about making some chick have an orgasm or jacking off himself smile

Yeah but Come is Prince "doing" Prince. It seems forced and unoriginal and too forward...for him. Not like the "wanna fuck the taste outta your mouth" from LDC which was honest and raw. Come is a pretender to the throne. And hey..I like Come. It just seems like his Riot Going On type of hit filler where he said I gotta do a song like that is my forte'.

I think there are many that define Prince...

Soft & wet - An introduction to his young mind

Bambi - Where he wanted to go, musically.

Head - Dirty funk always in the background

Controversy - Statements

Sexuality - His thoughts are coming together

1999 - Join the new breed

Purple Rain - deep

The Ladder - Spiritually gaining force

Kiss - but he can still funk

Forever in my life, The Cross, SOTT - Waking up

I Know - heaven is here!

Electric Chair - Regretting some of his past?

Still Would stand all time - Its coming

Money don't matter - The "big" contract views are changing

7 - Egyptian thoughts!

Race - waking up to the world

Gold - Spirituality growing

Chaos and disorder - drawing inward, the world in not good

Holy River - Saved. He hopes true love is whats missing.

The Truth - New Beginning

Until you're in my arms again - pain

I love U but I dont trust U - more pain

Last December - Try again at new beginning.

Avalanche - Dropping love for politics... be careful!

Sign 'O' The Times (the song: shows Prince's Social Consciousness)

Adore (shows that this man can express his love through song, like no other)

Darling Nikki/Come (NASTY!)

The Last December (shows that he's trying to leave a positive mark on the world)

Count The Days/ManOwar (shows that he's human, and he goes through the same SHIT, that we do, DRAMA!)

One Kiss @ a Time (he easily combines Sexual/Sensual)

Sometimes It Snows In April (he's more in-depth, than anyone would have ever thought. This song is good for today 9/11)

Blue cool
A coat of Blue Cashmere

I see what your saying but I disagree. If Come (the song) had been released in the 80's would you feel the same? Especially the alternate version with the "wrap your legs around my neck" bit.

SquirrelMeat- your list is interesting. It's chronological.

I hope you're wrong about Avalanche trading politics for love. He just wouldn't be Prince.

Put it this way--I think it would make a great B-side. I dont think it deserves the title of an album or theme for one etc. The instrumentation is great, lyrics etc. It just doesnt have that ...umph. Its sort of like Barnabus Collins leaving Dark Shadows.

The song(s) I would use 2 define Prince would be
"Damn U" (I dedicate that song 2 him)
"Controversy" (yes...this is practically his middle name)
and
"Insatiable" (because I know he is horny)

Prince is an angel. eye heart him.

In terms of writing perfect songs for a perfect moment in time, I would have to say Sign O'The Times, for the GENIUS that it is.

I'm just talking abut the song, period. Not an album title or a theme. And the particular alternate version I'm talking about is more electonic sounding than the released version. Matter of fact the music is totally different.

Great B-side... hmm "She's Always in My Hair" is a great b-side and so is "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore". Seems like you're saying the song is pretty damn good, Fat Elvis era or not... evillol
