slaughterhouse + the chocolate invasion

Only slowly is the slaughterhouse growing on me.
Funky. After the expectations r down it's quite enjoyable. After forgiving the obvious mistakes like "peace" and "radical man". One finds good but modest grooves. I 2 prefer 2 listen songs.

Chocolate though seems 2b a more commercial attempt. I like every song, mostly "Judas". High is very strange, in a creepy way, but I like it anyway. Plenty of very sweet jams on there though. Does this fine freaky album have a history I don't know about?

I purchased "1 nite alone", "chocolate" and "slaughter house" all at the same time, and soon after I was too busy with work to really savour them.

I think I prefer "chocolate" to "3121".

Do these albums have histories?

Just a mish-mash of mostly previously available downloads. They were supposed to be proper albums released with with a big CD Set through NPGMC.

The plug was pulled on the hard copies at the last moment due to "manufacturing problems".

So we got the lossy mp3s instead. mad
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

A few of the NPGMC songs from that era didn't end up on either of those albums ... namely "High" and "My Medallion".

There are some really good songs on both of those albums. Perhaps they might see the light of day eventually as proper CDs.

Yup. We have those songs of course, either by burning our downloads or on bootlegs, but it would be nice to get quality CDs direct from the source.

Judas Smile
CHORUS:
U been bamboozled, hoodwinked, took
If U thought that U could put me down
And not get a page in my book
U been bamboozled, hoodwinked, took
Tryin' 2 ball, U will fall
And never get a second look

Before me there was nothing
Without the eye U cannot see
Just a form in the darkness
I brought the light and U believed
With everyone of my creations
A future story would be told (Change it up)
I tried 2 change it up with temptation (With temptation)
But all your claims must be sold (Walk away with soul, soul)

4 every soul there's a buyer (There's a buyer)
4 every action there's a price (How much U pay for that, dude?)
4 every option there's a tryer
But when the claim run out, ain't nothing nice
That's why...

CHORUS

I changed your name, it didn't suit ya
I did the same 4 a little while (The same 4 a little while)
The day your love led 2 revenue (Talkin' about the money)
In return a Judas smile (Hahaha, U gave me)
What I am will never fade away
Like U being funky - it'll never be
Woo hoo, (What I am) What I am U will finally see (U will see)
Then U will admit 2 4 part harmony

CHORUS
(Hoodwinked)
(Ah, come on)

1979 times 2 or maybe a bit 'fo that
Me, your sister and yo' brother got paid when the man let 'em up 2 bat
Whaddya do, do U act like a fool and wonder why your people disown ya?
Sang any song Mr. Charlie wanna sang, see around here we don't know ya

They'd have 2 take me out (Okay)
4 treating B like a B if she ain't one
And if she is it's no good like a rat in the hood
We gonna give her a Bible and then some
Come on! (Uh)

The chocolate invasion starts here {x3}

The chocolate invasion
Neapolitan born 2 rule
I never was fond of a dumb blonde
That can't swim in the carpool
Your secret's out da box, B.
'Less U 'fess up 2 what U stole
Here's what we think - U're the weakest link
Get ready 'cause we coming with the old school (Old school)
Old school (Old school) {x2}
Come on, come on - give it 2 me, baby
(That's music, baby)
(Keep doin' it)

Ahh Mr. Aussieman what makes ya think I'll work 4 U?
Paying 15 cents on the dollar
Those are the wages of a fool, nigga
Pinocchio mentality on levels more than 9
From now on the only piece U'll ever get from me's my mind

Chocolate invasion starts here
Chocolate invasion starts here (Ahh)
The chocolate invasion starts here {x2}

Now wait a minute
How dare U call a robot 'Mecca'?
I knew that smack was jive
Step right up 2 the minstrel show
Starts in about 5 minutes
Confess these shuffling punks (Yeah)
Everyone claiming no sin
Act the fool if U wanna
Guess the quickest way out (Tell 'em) is the way in

(Bamboozled) U been bamboozled, hoodwinked, took
If U thought that U could put me down
With a song that got no hook (Oh no)
The chocolate invasion starts here
No matter your color U're still my brother
If U've got no fear - uh!
The chocolate invasion starts here
U still our sister although we missed ya
Come wipe away your tears

Peace 2 Common, (D'Angelo, Macy Gray, Lenny Kravitz)
2 brother Curtis - big love
Maceo (Larry Graham, Patti Labelle)
Erykah Badu

The chocolate invasion starts here
Chocolate invasion starts here
The chocolate invasion starts here {x2}

I don't know what's going on with this board, but this is what I tried to post:

I really like both of these albums. I think that when people stop limiting Prince's music to their expectations they are able to enjoy his creative offerings much more. Overall, I think that most of the NPGMC stuff is very underrated.

The Slaughterhouse and CI get much play from me. I would love to have official CDs for both. Some of my favs are:

Silicon (I LOVE this song!!! I usually turn it all the way up.)
Golden Parachute (laid back, souful mellow funk)
Props n' Pounds (that modulation is TIGHT!!)
Peace (funky and uplifting - nice message)
High (fun)
Hypnoparadise (dreamy)
Daisy Chain (minus the rap. I made my own edit.)
When I Lay My Hands on You (this song is so HAWT! sexy lyrics, vocals and guitar)
Supercute (cute)
Gamillah (beautiful and serene)
You Make My Sunshine (soulful, great vocals)

I know I am forgetting some. wink

Uhmm, High is on The Chocolate Invasion.

I think as Prince has slowed down releasing music, it is forcing people to go back and re-listen to this stuff, and it is growing on people once they give it a chance.

I stand corrected! smile I still wonder why My Medallion was left off of both ... but it is a kinda "novelty" song.

gee, thanks a lot!
And what u say about the expectations is of course perfectly true.
The idea of trusting the unknown is often scary, but that's the only place where things r real. You hit on a deep note!

The daisy chain is my favourite groove, I can easily tolerate the rap.

Again thanks 4 the lyrics, and the post. biggrin

Both albums are throwaway filler at best.

I skip through most of the tracks after an initial listening. I never much cared for Prince's plastic albums, and still think they're crap.

NorthernLad

I think there was some very strong material during that period. U Make My Sun Shine and When I Lay My Hands On You both have incredible vocal arrangements IMHO.

I also adore Hypnoparadise and The Daisy Chain. Vavoom and Supercute are also fun and very catch pop songs.

Had he compiled the best material from that period and put out an actual CD release, it may have done very well.

I actually have been listenning to both of these again this week.

Some good stuff there. Much better than what is on the radio now.

In some ways it is a shame the original "High" album never came out.
It would have been fun.

Maybe he will release some more "other" albums soon.
