I don't know... to me, Prince's voice wasn't fully developed until he wrote the song "Purple Rain" and even then it was a couple more years before it really took shape!

His voice may have been still developing, but he was a great singer in'78.
Two words....."For You"
[Edited 2/23/07 16:31pm]

ever heard the early versions of "for you"
he worked and worked and worked on that one
and even then, his voice is layered through many dubs
as far as i know, he's never performed that song live

laypeople don't know about studios snap, they just assume it's like that from the gitgo.

I never watch American Idol and I think most real musicians wouldn't even waste their time with it. It's like karaoke, there is zero artistry there. The gimmick of the judges is the catch, people watch to hear the outrageous reactions of the judges. I did karaoke one time in a lesbian bar, did Little Red Corvette, but being a musician, i didn't do nearly as well as the american idol, shower singing wannabees who knew how to dress up and hit the long vibratoed notes that is a staple of that type of singing. I did well, but i'd never do it again, it's a waste of time for a musician. Most rock musicians would not do well in that type of setting either, listen to Elvis, the stones, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, they would be too outrageous and would be clean cut enough to do anything but get a good ranking on. I despise it because it makes a mockery of the men and women who spend great amounts of time in their devotion to a craft.

i'm too old for that crap, are you kidding, they wouldn't touch me with a ten foot pole. they want little kids. i'm a man. One of my teachers who i outgrew tried to tell me i reminded him of some of the people on the show, this was after years of our being peers and friends, he turned on me. but you see, that's like an empty insult that just told me he'd outgrown his usefulness and is a loser himself. Anyone that would even think that kind of platform has any relevance is a loser. Prince has been quoted as saying he didn't believe in the show and it's probably for similar reasons.

Not only that, but the real reason i hate it, is because all of us musicians have to hear that we ain't shit from the time we start, from our families, friends, coworkers who are just miserable and jealous because they don't know how to think about life outside of there mundane world. All us musicians have to hear that crap and endure it and overcome it, and at a certain point, it loses it's sting. There really is no judge of anyone else, to see people stamped like that is innacurate, and unethical, you have old as people picking on little naive kids, that's the way of the world, just look at the military, but I hate it. I hate seeing people get duped into situations where they are made fools of in some way.

Well, you have a point, when i was that young and naive, i probably would, but that is just youth, i'm speaking from wisdom. No one is born good, I didn't even really start singing until i was 23 or so, i was playing and composing earlier, but you don't see any of that on american idol. it's pure garbage. At any rate, I've gotten better as a singer as I've gotten older, and so do most male singers, they mature later.

and for those of us who are real musicians, we spend hours and hours of work on it just for the sheer love of it. classical musicians have absolutely no incentive to practice other than love for it, and I believe that is a sign of most true musicians, they love it and are not doing it for accolades.

If he had a acoustic guitar at the audition or a piano he could sit behind while he performed at the audition then yes maybe. But if we are going off his voice alone then at that time I don't think he would make it to hollywood, his voice at that time wasn't his strength.
