At 18? No way - you could tell he had talent on stage, but most of the time he'd flail about not looking like he knew what he was doing and ended up looking ridiculous. Too nervous.

His moves on the Parade tour, though - cool cool cool cool cool

I think he'd have the talent to make it all the way.

But based on his attitude, I don't think he'd really want to get involved in such a thing. If he won, he'd probably hate it because they'd tell him everything he had to do and he'd rather be in control.

In my personal opinion, I like only 3/5 winners, but that's not really as bad as it seemed at the beginning of Season 4 cuz the last two seasons didn't end well for me.

Season 2: Clay Aiken have won, he worked the hardest and he had the best voice. I'll even stand by the fact that Ruben's winning was a fix... Clay has so much more talent and him being the more successful artist still isn't enough to get past the fact he lost.

Season 3: I'll be honest, I wasn't really crazy about anyone from season 3 and Fantasia. Don't get me started. I can't stand her. She doesn't sing, she screeches and disbelief don't get me started. [For those who want to comment that Prince screeches sometimes too... I let that slide, in fact I'm very used to it. He doesn't screech in 100% of his music.]

I hope someone good wins this year too.

With his afro, high heels, and the shiny gold pants he had on at AB, they'd let him through just for the ratings! lol

Then, they'd discover that there was much to him than his looks, and he'd blow them away. Unfortunately, he wouldn't be able to play instruments in the competition.

If your takling a 70s Americain Idol.
No.

Now, if your talking today's Americain Idol.
No.
Lol.

He had the talent at 18 for sure! It's just AI is not about talent,
It's about fitting into a mold.

Okay, here's my twocents

I think that Prince, if he did do AI as an 18 year old, his best out would be to play to Paula Abdul--when she's sober. excited

If we look at PA's track record, most of the guys that we obviously know she's crushed on have all had looks in common with Prince--light skin, great hair, and pretty eyes. (Justin Guarini, Corey Clark, Mario Vasquez...) And if P hops around in those little shorts, sans the underwear with certain parts of him bouncing and flopping, Paula might jump him right during a live telecast. (Lord knows she lost it when he was there last year!) bananadance <--Paula dancing to "Lolita" and "Satisfied".

I don't know... to me, Prince's voice wasn't fully developed until he wrote the song "Purple Rain" and even then it was a couple more years before it really took shape!

Now, if the show was about musicianship -- different story!

Since this show focuses on pretty much on vocals only, I don't think so. Prince would not have been able to show off his talents on pretty much every instrument nor his songwriting/arraigning/producing skills. Plus as someone commented earlier, his vocal skills early on were not as developed as they are now, plus his singing style is not what they are looking for on that show anyway.

His voice may have been still developing, but he was a great singer in'78.

Prince couldn't follow the rules and Simon "wouldn't get it"!
Randy would call him a dog.
Paula would smile and patronize, not wanting to offend, all along getting moist.

Exactly. And Dylan wouldn't have won, and John Lennon wouldn't have won, and Tupac wouldn't have won...

ever heard the early versions of "for you"
he worked and worked and worked on that one
and even then, his voice is layered through many dubs
as far as i know, he's never performed that song live

Yup.

Prince wouldn't stand a chance. His voice simply couldn't hold up. Plus the 18 year old Prince looked rather strange. It would have been disastrous. Let's remember the young Prince and his band failed their first attempt to convince their label to fund their tour.

Everybody here can pretty much acknowledge that Prince is a genius, and was so even early on. But he wasn't a "singer" in the sense that the AI winners are. And he still isn't. His performance at AI last year revealed just that. His voice is great---but after hearing the contestants sing, sounded flat. This isn't because Prince has a "Bad" voice, but because the contestants have excellent voices.

No. He wouldn't want to sing other people's songs and he couldn't play any instruments, so he probably wouldn't even waste his time auditioning. Not to mention, that AI is waaay image obsessed and Prince didn't fit the "commercial look" from all the old photos of him I've seen at that age...his choice of wardrobe was a little risque and definitely would not have been allowed on the show...it probably wouldn't be allowed on the show now. He was practically nekkid...mmmmm, half-nekkid Prince drooling... yummy lick, sorry, had a moment....what were we talkin' about again? Oh yeah, no, not the next American Idol.
