Prince fans that dont like funk??

I am finding more and more Prince fans that don't seem to like funk. To me this is like saying I like oranges but I hate orange juice. I don't understand it, maybe somebody can break this down better for me. I am aware that Prince is diverse and plays all kinds of different music, but he remains to be a very funk based artist, you can hear it in his studio works and especially in his live work.

i don't really think it's possible to like prince if you don't like funk.

that would mean you don't like 70% of his output

Well, I love Prince's music (pretty much all aspects of it) but JB, Sly and George Clinton's music does nothing for me. Then again, neither does Jimi Hendrix's music.

Takes all sorts, I guess.

no its not...prince's music has always been about blending genres. how many of his songs can you actually categorize as straight up funk? they've always had pop sensibility to them. imho.

One of the many reasons that I hate putting labels on music. Either it sounds good or it does not. The labels drive me nuts.

Funk is good stuff, but it's got the potential to be really self-indulgent. Once you're locked into a groove, as a musician it can be great fun - but too often the band forgets the audience is there, and you're left standing around thinking "OK, guys - get your hands off your dicks now and play something!"

That's because Prince started making weird and far out artsy/fartsy shit that attracted those fans. If he hadn't branched out into stuff like that, most of us would be liking strictly funk or rock.

The people that claim to like prince but not funk are those who like him for "fashion reasons", like "it's cool to say you like him cause most people you know don't" bullshit.

Well, of course it is. Hell, even polka music is better than what's on the radio these days. Toddlers banging on piano keys at random and beating on tin cans is better than what's on the radio these days.

However, if it comes down to a choice between funk and artsy/fartsy, keep that artsy/fartsy shit and give me some funk. And don't release artsy/fartsy one year and funk the next because the year inbetween is a year without funk.

The ones that irritate me more are the ones that don't know shit about funk but pretend they do. They only know funk that Prince has talked about such as Sly and The Family Stone, James Brown, Graham Central Station, or George Clinton. Ask them something about The Barkays, Cameo, Con-Funk-Shun, The Dazz Band, One Way, or Midnight Star, and they have never heard of them.
