For you idiots who think the Sign"O" the Times DVD is real....

I Wrote to NPGMC:

I would like you to know that I support Prince 100% and with that comes a realization that not everything released is legal. So to make sure I am helping him and not stealing from him I would love to know an answer to this question.

There is a DVD of Prince's concert movie Sign "O" the Times being sold on the internet. I need to know if this release is legal, and NOT a bootleg. It also boasts as a Worldwide Prince Productions Release which seems to be a Brazillian company. I know for a fact that NPG has no ties to this company, but do they have a right to sell it? They claim that smaller "international" companies get licenses from larger companies to make a certain amount of DVD's that would not be marketable to those larger companies. Is this true? And is this release legit?

Sincerely,
Chookalana

They Wrote To Me:

hello

It is a bootleg. Warner Bros. would have 2 release the DVD since they own it. And WB has no plans 2 spend money on a Prince project any time soon. We have heard that this particular bootleg is just a transfer of the video and is not high quality at all. U would b better off not buying it.

Okay the "genius" that you asked the question to at the NPGMC believes that Warner Bros. owns the rights to the "Sign O' the Times" movie so can we really believe what they are saying? The answer is no.

It is common knowledge that Warner's passed on the SOTT movie so Prince sold the distribution rights to Odeon films for the theater release which in turn used MCA Universal for the video release being as they didn't have a home video division.

derek

Ok...so who NOW owns the rights to the film? Most lesser known titles tend to be passed from company 2 company - does Odeon still have the rights to SOTT? Do Odeon Pictures still exist even?

Whoever has the rights 2 the film is in control of it's potential release 2 DVD...

It's sad that someone had to go to NPG to figure out if this DVD was a boot.

Duh.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

U took the words right outta my mouth,

ofcourse it´s a transfer from the video, but it´s better 2 have it on DVD: the latter doesn´t wear out!

Moreover, NObody knows when SOTT will B released legally.

Wow, it's obvious you take criticism easily. To escalate it to "fuckhead" so quickly. Tsk, tsk, tsk...

Do you have some anger issues you need to work out? I suggest getting into therapy quickly.

This Brazilian DVD is NOT a bootleg! I just received a copy yesterday and it's included with the DVD Music magazine from Brazil, a legitimate monthly magazine. The opening credits show that Alliance Atlantis are responsible for distribution, they must have bought them from Cineplex Odeon Films. The DVD is very professionally constructed (unlike bootlegs) with several menus, 2.0 and 5.1 channel sound, discography including The Rainbow Children... The problem is that the digital transfer is not as good as the original Japanese LaserDisc version (i.e., I compared the 2 simultaneously). But, for anyone who loves DVD technology and who wants this must-have film, the DVD version is better than the VHS version. eBay has them for sale.

Ummm...Warners does not own "live versions" of the songs...sorry. They own the "master recordings" to the studio version of the "Sign O' the Times" album.

Do you think that Prince isn't going to be able to put any of his old songs on the upcoming live cd because of WB?

The movie was released BEFORE he got out of his contract. If Prince could release it he would, he would make a shit load of $$$, and he knows this.
