That's told in Hahn's book, Possessed. He also implies that Prince was never really that close with Vanity in the first place- her personality was too "abrasive" for his taste, he already preferred more "demure" women and that Susan Moonsie was his primary girlfriend during that time period leading up to Purple Rain. I've asked this question before, and am still not clear...was Purple Rain written for Susan?

I know, right.

At the most,
I would descibe her personality as 'Scrubbing Bubblesque'.

Again, these are Alex Hahn's words, not mine, but he goes on to say stuff like how she had a rough childhood, getting into the issues with drugs, and was just generally more forceful and not as demure as the women he liked better. And as others said, she wasn't having the cheating either. Story goes on that he fired her, and then replaced her with a look alike on purpose.

I have that issue.

Me too.I remember rushing to Thrifty's after school to buy it in the spring of '83 (how many of you Old Schoolers remember Thrifty's? lol).It was the first article that mentioned the upcoming Prince movie.I was ecstatic.

I totally remember Thrifty's! Used to go there on my way home from junior high. Got my first glimpse of Playgirl there! silly, giggling preteens we were!

Not sure about Purple Rain, but When Doves Cry was definitely for Miss Moonsie.

Vanity always seemed more "in control" than most of Prince's women. She didn't appear to be weak at all, which is probably why she and Prince had problems as a couple. He likes women that he can control, but Vanity wasn't having any of that lol She demanded more money to do the 'Purple Rain' movie, and she demanded that Prince stop cheating. When this didn't happen, she said "Adios!"
