Solo - crock of sh*te?

Am I the only person who thinks this track is an adolescent pile of toss?

i like it. it's not exactly something i rock out to every day, but i think it's a great showcase for his voice...not to mention it's totally atypical for a prince song.

what?

it's an amazing display of his voice. his voice straddles opera, jazz, and gospel on there.

Oh grow up!

I just think the words are weak, I think swamping his voice with so much reverb is lazy production, and I don't think it's a particularly interesting performance.

I like it.. It's really a unique song. He really hasn't done anything else like it. It's not something I play regularly, but I think it works on the "Come" album.

Of course, Prince only did the music for this song. He did not write the lyrics.

Peter, I visited your myspace music page (which is probably the real reason you posted this jab at Prince in the first place -- to put your link on it and get attention for your very fine band). Your music with The Munity isn't as bad as it could be, but you're not really in any position to be gratuitously negative about anyone else's vocals (i.e. "Solo"). And your critique of P's use of reverb is just pedantic. Don't be so dour. And play nice. It's worth it.

Whoa there!

I posted this "Jab" because in a discussion about the Come album a lot of people were citing Solo as its saving grace, whereas I've always thought it was a poor track.

I don't think I was being gratuitously negative, I certainly wasn't saying my vocals were better than anyone else's (far from it - I've never considered myself to be a particularly good singer), I don't think it's pedantic to criticise what is, in my opinion, lazy and dull production, and I certainly didn't make the post to advertise my band.

I'd thank you not to be so patronising, and maybe to look up "pedantic" in a dictionary.

Wow. Ouch. Maybe something's getting lost across the pond. In my dictionary, and usage, you were being pedantic; calling Prince's use of reverb out just to show that you come from, and understand, the recording world. You're right, though. I was being patronising. Sincerely sorry about that. I should take my own advice and play nicer. I'm going to stand in the corner, drink a Red Bull, and hum "solo" while gurgling caffeine. Best of luck to The Mutiny, and to you, Peter. Woo!!!

I love this song because it sounds very different from the things Prince usually does. His voice on this song is phenomenal. Can´t believe you don´t like it.

I think it's one of those songs that you have to be in the right mood/place to listen and appreciate. It does sound odd on the album amongst all the funk tracks.

I used to not like this song. It wasn't until it was played for me while I was out in the desert and it was very quiet. It's acutally very stunning.

Now I'm not saying one needs to be out in the desert to listen to it or appreciate it. But try putting it on separately from the record. When you are alone and contemplative. Or maybe when it's raining out. It's important that it be quiet when listening to it. Some have said they have turned out the lights when listening to it.

Yeah, I get all that - but I still don't think it's up to much. Just doesn't grab me at all.

Funnily enough, as far as that sort of eerie, quiet, sit-in-a-darkened-room track goes, I love lying on the floor with my eyes closed and listening to "Life Can B So Nice" going into "Venus de Milo" - the end of the former gets my heart racing, and then it just leaves you hanging in mid air before "Venus..." starts up and floats you gently down again. Gorgeous!

I like Solo, but I'd have to admit there are times I refuse to listen to it cause it can bring me down. Other times it's just what I need to hear, reverb and all, maybe I feel all "echo-y" inside at those times.

Nope - like I said, I don't think he does anything particularly imaginative with the melody, and the words are horrible!

Yes, of course.
