3121 was it a success ?

It's now nearly a year since it was released. Based on the last year was it a success / failure or just average in comparison to previous albums ? taking into account sales / awards / critical acclaim etc.

Lets hear your opinion and what do you thinks next in the melting pot ?

The CD went gold and debuted at number 1, which is about the best that Prince can expect right now. He had absolutely no radio support, which is all the more disappointing because "Black Sweat" was his most commercial single in years. Considering the top CD, "High School Musical" sold only about 3.7 million and many "current" artists struggled to go gold or platinum, it wasn't too bad in the current musical environment. The days of name artists automatically going platinum or double platinum are over.

I would have to disagree - i think he missed it by not releasing "LOVE"
That song says it all for all kinds of people

I think it was a success in this musical environment, but he should have released "Love"-that song is great.

probably somewhere in the middle...blacksweat's success was killed by the annoying dog whistle. it really does kill interest in repeated listens.

i think fury could have been a hit if the snl version were released.

no one buys albums anymore. They had a huge article on how all album sales are about half in the last few years.

Was it a success?? Yeah sure, #1, he performed basically every song from it on tv for the fans.

Good enough, the great thing about Prince is, in 1 year he will have a totally new project cool

I just bought the 3121 CD last week...luv it fallinluv

I love mostly the whole thing and bought it because of the SB press conference performance of Get on the Boat and the SNL rerun that I saw of prince performing Fury....Love Lolita too.

QUESTION????? The little booklet that comes with the 3121 CD...the pictures...are those really photos of one of his homes????

Thanks to anyone who can help. biggrin

Snap

since radio doesn't matter anymore, which is true -- he could've done more to showcase these songs through other venues (pardon the pun). people are always trippin' over themselves when it comes to Prince performing live at their request. more talk shows, award shows, special appearances, etc. i would've loved to have seen something done with "Love" and "The Word" similar to the way he exposed his "Fury" on SNL. those two songs should've definitely seen the light of day in the public arena somehow someway.

come on Prince, ya ain't getting' younger...

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I read somewhere (Wikipedia, I think) that it sold 7 millions copies all over the world, so it was a success...

Perhaps the source was incorrect, but we can't forget that nowadays Prince is even more successful in certain countries of Europe (like UK, Germany, France or even Spain) that in the USA.

Where things are in music, I guess it is a success but I feel that there were songs on there that could have made it hit platinum. Love, the SNL version of Fury, even The Word and Lolita could and probably would have been huge. I would have loved it if Prince would have gotten songs from 3121 on a show like all of the CSI's and have it tie in with the storyline if possible. Prince could have done a lot with this project but it did go gold so there was some success to be found with it.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
