Why Wasn't UTCM Colorized? This is something I've been wondering about for the longest:
Why wasn't "Under the Cherry Moon" colorized? Sure I understand that he might have been going for the whole French 'film noir' sort of thing, but I just feel cheated to not see three crucial scenes in color: 1--The bathtub scene where he's actung silly on the phone. (His eyes were so lovely, even in b/w) 2--The white lace scene where he's running around behind Mary. 3--The scene where he's rocking the hell outta that gold suit. (I've only seen one color shot of that outfit, and it was kinda junky and outta focus.) Is there a color version? I love a Man who:
Wears More Make Up Than Me. Wears Four Inch Stilleto Boots. Changes His Name To An Unpronouncable Symbol. Who Changes His Name Back From An Unpronouncable Symbol. Oh And Most Importantly, Who Is Sexy Little Drop Of Butterscotch

It was filmed in colour, and B&W-ized later.
A colour version is not circulating.

It was filmed in color.
But when Prince saw how tacky his outfits looked against his caramel skin, he insisted it be in Black & White. Moreover, many of the colors were sooooo last season by the time the film when into the cutting room.

I think that the decision to show it in black & white was so that the film's over-all crappyness wouldn't be so vibrant.

That can't be. Graffiti Bridge would have been transfered to braille if that were the case.

For such a small thread, I did laugh a lot.
Oh yeah - answering your question edit: The movie wasn't colorized so this thread could be made and we could all get a really good laugh out of the comments that followed. [Edited 2/18/07 19:08pm] HE'S COMING AGAIN

Speaking on color:
I heard that the Rolls Royce that Mary pulls up in front of Le Pavillion in was purple. Supposedly, Prince refused to continue filming until they found a purple Rolls Royce. Anyone else hear that one? Is it true?

I've heard that it was filmed in colour, but was edited together after being turned into black&white. So no edited version of the film in colour exists.

The story I heard was that Prince insisted on B&W because he wanted to film to recall films of the 1930s. WB ordered that the film be shot in color, just in case they were able to change Prince's mind later. (As if.)
The original color footage probably exists...though heaven knows where. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I think B&W fits the storyline and mood the movie perfectly.

I think the movie looks cool in b&w!

I would like to see a coloured version released, and I'm sure many of his fans would too. Prince is a colourful character. Black and white doesn't do it for me

Right and plus after riding along faithfully with Prince throughout many years I've come to love the input of orgers like Imago. I think it's totally possible to be a loyal Princehead and still find humor in the comments on this site.
