When a Prince show starts late...what is he DOING?!

Okay, I asked this before in a thread, but I'm going to start a new thread specifically asking this question:

When a Prince show - specifically a 'regular' show, not an aftershow - starts an hour or two (or more) late....uhhhh...what exactly IS it that he's doing back there? I mean, he's a little notorious for going on stage no sooner than he feels like tippytapping those heels up to the microphone, but come on...what could be so important that he has to keep a house full of people waiting?

Is he finishing a crossword puzzle or a game of Jenga?

Is he catching up on a few episodes of Lost that one of his assistants recorded for him?

Is he finishing a Harry Potter book?

Is he baking cupcakes for the band?

WHAT IS HE DOING BACK THERE?!?!

We need a PrinceCam to answer these questions. But until then...what is YOUR guess?

does it take two hours to get something to eat? and should he really be eating or napping right before going on stage? that's not very healthy.

i think he's back there playing X-Box or something.

I have heard that sometimes he changes show content within seconds of the curtain going up. Perhaps he is making changes to the set, going with what moves him at he moment.

Maybe he is psyching himself up to perform. During rehearsal, Prince is fine tuning his band. Maybe before he goes on its his time.. maybe to rehearse his role, build his confidence, prey, work on 'ahem.."spontanious" quips to come out with' etc.. maybe he is listening to playback from rehearsals/jams working out when he and the band are tight, what worked what didnt.

technical difficulties, hitches, problems to be ironed out.

perhaps he just chills in his dressing room and drains his bag? `

I would love to see a behind the scenes of a prince concert (kinda expand on the beggining of the ONA Las Vegas DVD) - arriving, the rehearsal, the costumes, before show time, hitting the stage, coming off stage. but i think we all know how likely that is to happen.

It takes two hours just to get that mole right on his face, the mascara, eye liner and false lashes. Come on, give the guy a break.

Anticipation is keepin me waiting.

He prefers Playstation.... wink
I'd need a nap if I was going to be exerting that much energy for a long period of time! Hell, I take a nap before I go to watch a concert!

I have always wondered if he has ever suffered from the runs and had to sit on the toilet until relief found it's way? I mean, he is human just like us rite? That could be the scene befor a show, don't you think?

Judging from what I know, he's probably doing some kind of ritual where he gets himself in the right state of mind to go stage for a performance.

He's a different person onstage and offstage, so for all we know, this "ritual", if it does exist, is meant to help him revert to the person he is onstage.

That's my theory and I think it's a very plausible one.

I saw him in Grand Rapids in 2000 (I think). I can't remember the venue, but it was a fiasco getting into the place. Not only was it the middle of Winter in Michigan, but it was snowing like crazy and freezing outside. We stood outside for like an hour before being able to get in, then stood crammed into the front area by the ticket booth for another hour waiting to get our tickets at Will Call.

If I remember correctly, the show was supposed to start at 8 p.m., but with the chaos going on, he said he wasn't going on until everyone was seated. I don't think he went on till like 9:30 that night.

As musician I can say that is RARE that a concert starts at the established time. In Italy we talk about "academi 15 mins delay".

Prince is terrible... 2 hours of delay is pretty much. I remember that day in Milan.

I doubt he takes a nap...If he does, he would deserve an award.

When I have concert I drink so many coffees that Im pretty awake. Usually during the delay I talk and joke with other players... Laughing helps 4 relaxing...

If Prince can make it last 2 hours..... HE'S A CHAMPION... lol

Maybe this the reason that he's so attractive?

If that's the case, then one past experience I had at a concert shouldn't be a big deal compared to that. I went to see Jesse McCartney in concert and after the opening act, he made us wait for 45 minutes before he went on. But then again, with Prince it's more understandable that he'd make his audience wait. Whatever he is doing, it's gotta be doing him good because he still puts on a good show either way.

No show I've ever been to has started on time. It's always usually 30-90 minutes late. I can certainly say I'd wait 2 hours to see Prince and not give a crap about waiting that long. Just more time to build up the anticipation and excitement of seeing him. biggrin

Consider that he's never been seen in public without a boatload of make-up on and I think the answer is obvioous.

When he and Tamar performed at Nokia last year, the start time was supposedly delayed b/c he came out on stage before the doors opened and saw that security had set up barricades/gates too far from the stage. He told them to move them (or remove them) so that the fans could be as close to the stage as possible.

In general, I suppose he has his certain little rituals--drinking tea w/honey, burning incense, getting his voice ready, deciding what to wear...trying to teach the Twinz how to sing...oh wait, scratch that last one, obviously that's not part of the ritual.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
